Question about height/BMI

Recommended Posts

I am just starting the lab band process, seeing the surgeon for the first time tomorrow. I have Cigna POS and have printed out all of their requirements.

I picked up all of my medical records today and have been looking at them. They all have me listed as 2 inches taller than I am. This is really stupid, but at some point, I was told that I was 5'7" and since I wear heals anyway most of the time, I never disagreed with it. When asked how tall I am, I've always told everyone that I was 5'7" (hence, how it ended up in my medical files).

I had my husband measure me in my sock feet, and I'm actually just a little bit over 5'5".

So, here is my question. If we go by the height my husband measured me at, my BMI has been over 40 for the past 5 years (ranging from 40-46). But, if we go by the height in my medical records, my BMI drops one year to 38 (unhealthy dieting, dropped the weight quick, gained it back + more, this is within the past 2 years).

I don't really have any other documented health issues except for hypothyroidism.

How would you handle this? Will my surgeon measure me? Do I need to call my dr and have them change my height on all of my records??? I know it is a stupid question, but probably not at stupid as me not knowing how tall I am LOL!

When you go to your initial consult, they will weigh you and measure you. Right then they will caculate your BMI. However I would explain to them what you have said here. When they send your paperwork to your insurance, the doctor deciding if this is medically needed will look at your height and know that you could have no shrunk 2 inches lol and should assume the 5'7 was a mistake but I would ask your surgeon to have a note made in the paperwork they send to them. Can't be too careful with insurance!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
