Serious question for embarrassing problem

Recommended Posts

HELP!! I have severe gas and it's become a very serious and embarrassing problem. I was banded 3/13 and will have first fill 5/6. It doesn't matter what I eat, I get gas. I'm glad I can pass it but it's so bad that I dread eating lunch because I have to go back to work.

Anyone else have this problem and what are you doing for it... I've tried just about everything I can think of.

yep! I burp ALL the time. Even with Protein drinks... I burp... if I drink Water, I burp. Its embarassing but I just explain that I recently underwent surgery and that I am still working out the gas they used to pump up my abdomen. If they dont like it shove em! I say excuse me after each time and try to keep it as quiet as I can. If they cant handle that then oh well!!! lol... good luck getting it better though

Thanks for the suggestions,

I'm beginning to think that I'm not chewing enough. It happens when I don't eat gassy foods, I don't eat/drink dairy. Even when I don't have veggies...

Today, I took chicken salad off a pita and just ate that... The afternoon was not pretty

I just got my band on April 17. I had a LOT of gas pressure. I picked the brain of a friend of mine who'd had gastric bypass 8 years ago. She said the 'itol' sweeteners gave her the worst gas. Sure enough the 'no sugar added' popsicles I'd been having had sorbitol. i stopped eating them and have felt much better.

Now I just think I'm having gall bladder issues. Oh, the back pain. : (

i wonder if thats a side effect? i was visiting family 2 weeks after my surgery. i drove to san antonio from houston with my mom and my 18month old. my back pain got progressivly worse all day. i thought at first maybe it was from the band, since that was the longest id driven since the surgery (and i drove from louisiana to houston the day before) it ended up so bad that i couldnt even make it home from san antonio- we had to stop and get a hotel room. that was wednesday night. thursday morning i felt better, but by the night it was getting bad again. i woke up at like 430am friday in the worse pain of my life- worse than back labor even- and throwing up. i had my mom take me to the ER.

after shooting me full of pain meds (major ones too) and testing me all day, they figured out it had nothing to do with the band, but it was acute pancreantitis and that was either causing or caused by gall bladder issues. they wanted to wait til the pancreantitis got better (which it didnt. i had a continuous narcotic drip, and they ended up giving me a pump for the meds too) to do surgery. i was NPO til tuesday. it was torture, i would have done anything for even a piece of ice. anyway, they did surgery on tuesday, and when i woke up, the back pain was gone. it was heaven... and i got to drink.

the bad part was i then ended up having to stay in houston for 2 more weeks til i was able to drive back to louisiana on my own.

i hope your gall bladder isnt the problem

sorry for the thread jack, lol

I used to have really bad gas with most anything I ate. I started using Beano and that really worked for me. But your problem could possibly be lactose intolerance.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
