Hello All

I am tentatively scheduled for surgery on June 11th. I have all my testing done so far and called the Dr office yesterday and they have recieved all my Tests. I have to go in MAy 13th My birthday of all days to go over all the test with them. My question is this do alot of people wait until theey tell you to go on the pre-op diet before they start it or do most peopel start to watch what they eat at the transition stage where I am now. I went for my first Appointment at the end on February and I know I have put some weight on since than (scared to know how much weight exactly). I know that this is somthing that I have to do and I definetly know that this is a life change and that i have to use the band as a tool and I am going to have to struggle to make the right food chices daily and it is going to be hard. I guess I am at this point just getting my last licks so to speak in before my surgery. But I would love to hear from people for advise should I be starting to diet so to speak now before they put me on a pre op diet

I would wait. Every doctor seems to have a different pre-op approach....some don't even require a pre-op diet! And the duration is what they think is appropriate. I wouldn't embark on what might or might not be what the doctor wants. The "last supper" syndrome is pretty typical across the board. just don't go crazy and eat everything you see! In reality you aren't going to have to give up the things you like; you're going to have to give up the excessive quantities.

I did a few last suppers and then just felt bad about it. I started my preop diet (I kind of had to just go on a diet because I didnt have any instructions yet) right away.

The reason I am getting a band isnt because I cant lose weight, its because I cant keep it off. So I fee like any weight I can lose now will be kept off if I can keep my committment to the band. Also I guess I am thinking to get myself in the band mindset (eat when hungry, and much less quantities and focus on nutrition) and kind of test myself because this is for life. (If I cant do it now with the band around the corner...)

Anyway my doc really doesnt give you a preop diet so I am just going hi Protein lo everything else. I have lost 6 pounds, and I get my band a week from tomorrow.

Good luck with whatever you do...it will all be fine either way! Cali

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
