One week Post op and questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have a question regarding foods and calorie intake I am on mushy/ solid food and I have noticed that it is quiet common to gain a few pounds back during this stage but I want to know what should I eat and what are the key factors in making sure I don't gain too much weight back during this time. I am starting to feel hungry and I am concerned that I am not getting the recommended amount of Protein? Please help thanks

Do not focus on your weight right now. I know it's hard. You are still in the healing phase of this journey. The weight loss phase doesn't officially begin until you have a fill in your band. Follow the doctors orders in regards to portion sizes and types of food you can eat. The bottom line is that you are consuming so few calories on liquids and mushies that the body shuts down and goes into starvation mode. Your body will recognize the new portions soon enough. Use the band as a tool. Don't try to outsmart it by dieting.

My doc stresses Protein (my doc does 1 week of some allowed carbs for some volume, then cuts them out again) and exercise. Just follow your doctors orders and the plan he gives you.

I just started mushies today too and I'm expecting the weight loss to slow some but I'm still eating such small portions, I can't imagine gaining. Let's hope!

Any pounds lost during this phase is a bonus only. Don't stress it. And remember, this is a journey, not a race. That's what helped (and still helps) me.

It is a journey and it's mine so I just have to take it day by day and make the right choices, excercise and not compare to what others have lost and all . I am just new at this so bear with me, What are sliders food?

Nothing to bear with, we all do it.

Sliders are fatty foods like cakes, ice cream, chips, etc., which are easily tolerated by most.

Thanks Beth  I really appericiate your kind gesture. Today was my first day back at work and I was so tired, had a bad headache and hungry the oatmeal, Soup wasn't cutting it so I am going to have light yogurt maybe some tuna fish and veggies and try and make a Protein Shake as well. I was feeling horriable today so hopefully better tommorrow. I am also working on Water intake so far I am able to get 40oz of water not including other drinks.< /p>

You'll do great!

But honestly, I think to some degree we ALL compare ourselves, and that can really hurt us. I know I've done it -- I look at somebody who either got banded near the time I did or look at how well somebody did in the same number of months and start doing the math... It's not good for us to do that because we aren't competing. I know you know this, but I just wanted to reiterate it.

That's what I mean by it's a journey, and you correctly said it's YOUR journey. though it's not dieting, I find that I go through a lot of the same things as I do when dieting -- plateaus, temptations, etc. So even though it's different, a lot of the underlying issues are still there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
