SOLID FOODS??? and swelling

Recommended Posts

What type of solid foods will I be able to eat? right now i'm on mushies so tired of eggs, oatmeal, tuna, baked fish, refried Beans and apple sauce. I was banded on 4/8/09. I need some ideas if any on how to spice up these mushie foods until i'm on solids. Also, my stomach is still swollen i lost 11.5 lbs but my pants are tight, How long does the swelling last?

Swelling depends on the individual. Mine went away pretty quickly, but some people take weeks. I was able to start adding "real" food after one week of mushies and within two weeks was eating normally. How about yogurt, SF pudding, cottage cheese, runny mashed potatoes, SF popsicles? Spice up your foods? Well, huevos rancheros (eggs with salsa and cheese), go easy on the salsa and use the runny stuff rather than the chunky. Put a little cinnamon in your applesauce. Add some of that runny salsa to your refried Beans. If you like spinach, cook a box of frozen spinach, puree it in the blender and add salt, pepper and a little lemon juice and top your fish with it. Hope that helps.

What you can and cannot tolerate varies by person and by restriction. I can eat pretty much any meat most of the time but when I am really tight after a fill, I have to be extra careful. Some days I am tighter and can tolerate less. Sometimes the meat is too dry and I can't get it down as easily. I can eat most fruits/veggies except the fibrous ones like celery, asparagus stems and broccoli stems, apple skins, peach and plum skins and dried apricots. I can not tolerate doughy foods like thick pizza crust or soft breads. As long as you follow the rules for how to eat, you will learn to gauge what you can tolerate and when you need to take it easy.

Where exactly do you feel the pinching feeling?

I had my surgery on 4/08/09 as well and am in the mushies phase too.

I have had a little pain around my band off an on. It goes away eventually. Then I do something like, miss a step on the stairs and land hard and the pain comes back for a day or so. My guess is, that it is the flap on your stomach that the surgeon folded over the band to keep it in place. I think it is just going to need some time to heal in place.

As for foods:

I would stay away from the red meets for a while, I tried a little piece a few days ago - just to see - and chewed it till it was dissolved and my stomach did not want to process it. I could not eat or drink anything the rest of the day for fear of anything coming back up.

What I have been eating Apple sauce, Cottage cheese, Cream of (you name it) Soups, French Onion Soup - My wife gets these in the organic section and they come in boxes that you pour out of, great for measuring just what you need. Egg Flour Soup and Hot and Sour Soup from my favorite Chinese Restaurant. Canned chicken Breast meat.

Canned tuna (3 oz cans) with a teaspoon of light mayo - can't stand non-fat mayo - and a half a teaspoon of pickle relish. I make this just like I was making a sandwich.

Little cans of chicken Vienna Sausages - They are good in small doses.

Egg salad - Make it just like you make your sandwiches and eat it - just make 1 or 2 hard boiled eggs, add mayo, relish - ta da.

I try to lean towards the Proteins. Speaking of which. I get tired of that Isopure Protein powder so I sometimes mix two scoops with an 11oz Atkins chocolate Protein shake and I get 65 G of Protein in something that really does taste good.

Anyway, good luck,

-BSG

I know mushies can be a challenge... and finding ideas on new things can be tough. I came across a great blog from someone who had bypass surgery... she has wonderful recipes. she has some good suggestions for the mushie stage. Her blog is: theworldaccordingto eggface.blogspot.com

I would highly recommend checking out this blog. I am always getting good recipes and ideas from it.

That is port site pain and perfectly normal. This area causes the most discomfort. Your port and the tubing is stitched to muscle and there is a lot of nerve tissue in that area. It gets better every day but it took several weeks for it to heal completely. Just listen to your body and if there is any pain when exercising or lifting don't continue.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
