hot food vs. cold food being able to go down

Recommended Posts

This is so weird- I tried eating tortellini the other day- it was served cold and went down fine.

Then I bought some at the store and boiled it and ate it hot. It got stuck and I had to pb it up!

I just tried it again today COLD and everything was fine

Does anyone have any information on the temperature of foods mattering to the band?

I don't have any temperature issues with food, but I do have them with liquids. I can not tolerate cold liquids. I seem to swell shut if I take a swig of an ice cold beverage. Warm to room temperature are OK. Sorry I can't help you with the warm food issue.

I am still on liquids so I haven't had the experience but was thinking........prior to banding when I had cold food in my mouth I think I would chew more. Especially cold pasta- it kinda sticks to your cheeks. Warm food can easily slide down your throat without chewing it. I could easily swallow tortollini without chewing much. Perhaps chew more? I have had the experience with temperature sensitivity with liquids though as the previous poster said.

Warm is much easier for me.

Cold yogurt straight from the fridge first thing in the morning - whoa, forget about it. Instant blockage. Dangerous at other times of the day too - which is what makes yogurt a good snack for me, I have to eat it slowly and carefully.

Things that are REALLY cold like ice cream or a quickly gulped cold drink can set off agonising bellyaches for me. Its not blockage, its a colicky muscle spasm thing aches all the way up my esophagus and into the roof of my mouth, and its one of those horrible pains that you cant curl up into a ball to relieve, its just unrelenting. And if it happens, I really cant function, its obvious to all around that I'm in pain.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
