Newbie question on Traveling

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for my lap band on May 4th. I just found out I am suppose to attend a 4 days business conference in Vegas the week after my surgery. My boss is aware of my situation. Is it realistic I can attend with no major issues? I'll have to do some work to find the proper nutrition I am sure. I can probably get out of it if it seems too risky.

I had my surgery Oct 3rd and I had our family vacation to Disneyland Oct 10th and then a week long cruise after that. It was torture for me but I did it and lost 15 pds in two weeks. I had soup/broth, brought my Protein Shakes and had popsicles. I actaully cheated a couple of times and had a few sips of a shake because it was killing me watch everyone else enjoy everything while I had liquids but you will be fine. It will be hard mentally more so but if you have someone close you can call or talk to you will be fine when it is all said and done. Good luck with your surgery.

If the business conference is 1 week post op, I think you will be fine. I would double check with your doctor to make sure blood clots aren't a risk and from the nutritional perspective, make sure you are prepared...lots of crystal light, you'll need to bring lots of Protein and have access to milk.

IMO, I would not go if I were you. One week post-op, you are still recovering from surgery. You need to rest and take care of yourself and not be concerned about all the things that go along with an out of town business conference. What happens if you have some sort of complication or question? I think for the first few weeks after surgery, you need to be near your doctor. All you need to do is to provide a medical excuse from your doctor that says that you are not able to travel until after such and such date. You probably won't have any problems or complications but be extra cautious. You won't regret it.

I've heard quite a few people say they traveled within a week of surgery. The hard part was, as others have already noted, sticking with the liquid post-op diet. If you think you can handle the temptations, then you should be fine.

I went to work after 1 week. It was very tiring for me, the first day I went home half day, the next days I was taking naps mid day upstairs. I was on soft food at that point, but hardly eating so that was not difficult. I don't think that I would've been able be at a conference though. Unless, you are free to come and go as you please. Also, you will be on a weight restriction, so, is someone going to be carrying all of your bags and stuff like that?

Well, about 10 days after my surgery I flew to England for a week or so to manage my University. I don't think it'll be a problem, however if you're going to be flying remember to get up and walk around every so often to make sure you don't get blood clots. Good luck! Bring your own drinks, such as a couple of thermos', one with a beverage and another with a warm broth. Resist snacking!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
