Hello All! I just wanted to see how you are doing with the pre-op diet (if that's a requirment for you)?

I started mine on Friday and that day went well. I woke up with an excruciating headache on Saturday and was unable to eat or drink anything most of the day. Then when I finally felt better I decided to take a shower and wash my hair. Well I nearly PASSED OUT in the shower. I could feel myself losing strength and got out before things got ugly. It took me a while to get myself together. I plan to call my doctor about this tomorrow. I think I may have had a low blood sugar reaction. After I drank some juice, I felt much better.

My concern is, how the h--- am I gonna make it only liquids post surgery? Do you think that since I have to be on this special diet the next two weeks, my body will just adjust? I never want to feel like I did yesterday, it was very scary!

You didn't say what your pre-op diet consists of and, believe me, pre-op diets varay quite a bit from one doctor to the next. Most involve at least a couple of Protein Shakes a day. Some are all liquid. The headache may have just been a reaction to the sudden change in your diet. I would have taken some Tylenol and made a BIG effort to keep drinking fluids. By the time you got to that shower, you were dehydrated and that's what caused you to feel so badly. Talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner about what you can do differently, and about what would have made a difference. Good luck!

I did everything as instructed, but still had the headache from hell for three days straight. It's the combination of "fasting" and less Protein. Very common according to my doctor. Keep well hydrated! This too shall pass!!!

Blessings

Thanks to both of you.

My pre-op diet consists of two shakes (carnation or slim fast) and a balanced meal. (no Pasta, potatoes, bread, corn, etc.)

I've heard of some pre-op diets only consisting of Clear Liquids, so I'm thankful that mine has variety even as minimal as it is! I've lost 5 pounds already. All I can think of is...dang, I've been eating that much. Geez. I'm so glad to be doing this!!

I know the feeling of starting the pre-op. I have been on mine for 3 weeks now since my 1st surgery date was delayed until 5/1. Hang in there is does get better and it will be well worth it. As vayiayia said, "just keep well hydrated".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
