Hi Kimmy,

Have you talked to your doctor? Does he know of your panic attacks?

It would be good to notify him of your concerns and of the attacks. You are under stress, and it is pretty normal to be concerned / upset before surgery. I know you are trying to be calm - maybe other activities can help you get your mind off of the surgery for a while and help you to calm down.

You also MUST eat something - going into surgery with nothing for sustenance is NOT good - you will be on liquids for a while after surgery, and you don't want to be too weak. Try to eat small amounts of a good-for-you food that you also love. Maybe something you haven't treated yourself to in a while. Try fresh fruit, yogurt, or something light.

You do have to follow doc's orders for the day before surgery - they differ, so review those to be sure you are doing what you need to before surgery.

Good luck, and let me know how you're doing! You are on the threshold of a wonderful journey - I wish you all the best! :)

Anxiety is pretty common before surgery of any kind, and I'm betting you've never had any surgery with general anesthesia and that is making the normal anxiety much worse. Just relax. Try very hard to pay attention to something else. Basically, you'll go to the surgery center. They will change you into a hospital gown, put a funky papery hairnet over your hair and give you some sock-like slippers for your feet. Either at this time or after you get to the operating room, they will be EKG leads on your chest for heart monitoring purposes. They will set up an IV. I walked to the operating room, but they might roll you there. I thought walking was reassuring. I laid down on the operating table, got comfortable, they gave me a warm blanket, and the anesthesiologist said "I'm going to give you something to calm you down"...and I was immediately out like a light. Woke up in recovery about an hour later. So, it's really not heinous. Everybody was just as nice as they could be and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. If the panic attacks you are experiencing are really bad, call the doctor. He could prescribe something but I don't know if it's an acceptable pre-surgery drug. But just take a deep breath, breathe out and keep moving forward.

There is a difference between a true Migraine and a headache. We don't typically get true migraines from a lack of food, more often food is a trigger for migraines. It would be more likely that you have a headache and the treatment is much different.

No, it is not okay to eat foods that are not on your diet. You need to be calling your doctor instead of coming here asking if it is okay to not follow your doctors instructions.

She's probably on the pre-surgery liquid diet.

Why? Do you have science to back up this claim? ;o)

Call your doc, if you on the liquid diet there are plenty of liquids that have nutrients. Ebonyrose is right you dont need to starve your body but at the same time you need to follow your docs orders. Call your doc, and it is perfectly ok to come here for support thats what this forum is about, but please call your doc. He can give you something to help you calm down and he may tell you to go to mushy foods or somethings to help with the Migraines. food deprivation btw can trigger migraines! Especially if she is used to a diet high in caffiene.

Common Migraine triggers include:

Stress (either during a stressful time or right after stress subsides).

Menstrual cycle in women.

Too much or too little sleep.

Fasting or skipping meals.

Changes in barometric pressure and weather.

Bright light or reflected sunlight.

Foods such as chocolate.

Excessive caffeine or caffeine withdrawal.

Smoking or being around someone who smokes

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

No, actually stopping caffiene is typically a headache and not a migraine. It is important to differentiate between the two because treatments are quite different for one vs. the other.

Headaches from a lack of carbs is usually from blood sugar issues. We are used to a great deal of carbs and when we don't eat our usual diet your pancreas can put out a bit too much insulin and your blood sugar drops and that causes a headache.

I'm all for support, I am not all for messing with the pre or post op diets. They are in place for very specific reasons. When it comes to things that can make a difference in surgical outcome I don't sugar coat anything.

Caffine withdrawl is pretty intense besides smoking caffine addiction is almost as hard to quit. The headaches your sufferiing from are probably 2 fold. Sugar and caffine withdrawl and just the hormonal changes in your body. Also your probably not getting enough Water. I feel for you because I went through this as well before my surgery. As for the panic attacks have you had panic attacks before? Where they diagnosed by a doctor and are you taking medicine for them. Talk to your doctor and he may need to change your meds. If youve not been diagnosed before then your probably just really nervous. I went through the same thing. This is a life changing event yet it is one that is done alot by our DRs. My surgery wasnt that terribly bad in fact I was ready to start doing every thing I did before the surgery with in 2 days after it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
