When choosing a therapist for food issues....

I've done awesome for the first 6 months banded. I have recently realized that I have a problem with food, that's why I got big and it's fighting to keep me there, and I will not let this happen! I never wanted to admit this before.

My question is this. I am ready to seek help via some type of therapist. I know the difference between Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Counselors, but I don't know which one to choose.

Also, my insurance lists 150 within 5 miles from me, how do I ever decide? Can I find someone that deals with food issues?? Anyone have any experience in this? Thanks.

I chose my therapist based on the fact that she deals with eating disorders. I think the doctors that specialize with that will have a better understanding of what we are dealing with as it deals with our relationship with food. My therapist is psychologist/counselor that specializes in eating disorders. I did an internet search for doctors in my area specializing in eating disorders. With that list, I located the ones that were also listed under my insurance policy. I hope this helps.

Did you have to have a psych eval? If so, contact that Dr. even if they don't do sessions they could recommend someone to you how deals primarily with food issues. The Dr. that did mine was really great and I'm thinking of going to her after I get banded.

Good Luck!

I posted in my blog about my psych eval, he was a nightmare, and he tried to deny me to surgery because he thought I was too young for it, and I'm in my twenties...

But, I understand why you recommended that, many people's eval DRs were awesome I hear! I was not so lucky

I did do a search on Psychology Today's site and saw pictures of all the therapist's. I found one right down the street, my insurance covers, that deals with eating disorders and a few other issues I deal with. She is awesome sounding, she does some psychoanalysis and power of thought (I guess you can say new agey sounding) and I am thrilled to go check it out.

Thanks guys! and I highly recommend searching on Psychology Today then cross reference the names in your insurance book to make sure they are covered.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
