sdeale0928 0 Posted April 22, 2009 I have been banded for 11 days now, and just had my first round of hiccups. Are hiccups as bad as vomiting? I don't want anything to cause the band to slip. Any thoughts?
jukebox81782 0 Posted April 22, 2009 I, too have the hiccups! RIGHT NOW! I was banded a week ago today, and it's really freaking me out. HELP!
perth bridetobe 0 Posted April 22, 2009 Hey guys - I think hiccups are a sign of overeating , your bodies way of letting you know you have had too much / too far (not sure of this ) but I got them yesterday and found the BEST cure on line. (I had them 3 times yesterday and each time fixed them with this): The 30 Seconds Cure[1] Start by inhaling through your mouth until your lungs feel full (when it feels like you cannot inhale any more). For overall best results, try to do this as quickly as you can. DO NOT LET ANY AIR OUT. Swallow. You are not really swallowing anything but it seems thatwithout this act, it doesn’t work. DO NOT LET ANY AIR OUT. Now inhale some more. You don’t need to inhale a lot, but do get some more air in. It will start to get difficult to do this as you go, but keep trying. You obviously can’t suck in as much air as you did initially, but just a little will do (think of it as taking a “sip” of air). DO NOT LET ANY AIR OUT. Swallow again. This too will start to get difficult as you go. DO NOT LET ANY AIR OUT. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you cannot swallow again. While it seems you can almost always suck in just a little more air, it is the swallowing that gets to be impossible. When you feel like you cannot swallow again, swallow again anyway. It will be hard to do, your face will probably turn red, and you may make squeaking sounds. But you CAN swallow one last time. By this time, your lungs should also be quite full and it should be difficult to get much more air in as well. While you should try not to let any air out, if you have really repeated steps 3 and 4 as many times as you can, you probably will end up letting a little out before you can take that last swallow. If you find that air keeps escaping out of your nose even early in the process, try squeezing it shut with your fingers. Exhale. Hope it works for you too. Brockbabe82 0 Posted April 22, 2009 Don't worry about the hiccups they are not going to do any damage, at least that is what my surgeon said. Before I was banded I never had the hiccups, maybe twice in my life, now ALL THE TIME.lol Actually it is quite embarrasing, because they are uncontrolable, LOUD, and frequent. It sucks to have them in the beginning though because they can hurt very badly.
jukebox81782 0 Posted April 22, 2009 Cool!! Thanks for the tips and wisdom!! I'm still in the liquids phase, so I'm not sure that they were the result of overeating, but they have gone away, and now I know that they're common (oh joy...) And not gonna hurt me! WendyII 0 Posted April 24, 2009 (edited) My dad taught me a cure for hiccups that works 100% of the time for me. If you get hiccups, put a little bit (maybe 1/2 tsp) white sugar on your tongue and hold it there with your mouth closed (no talking). It cures my hiccups almost immediatley. Once the hiccups are gone you can spit the sugar out. I have had hiccups three times since getting the band last week and I think it's because I'm taking HUGE bites of things. The hiccups are not fun. I'm going to put a sugar packet in my purse for emergencies. Edited April 24, 2009 by WendyII
beautiful mariposa 1 Posted April 24, 2009 Sugar really does work. It is an old remedy. smile
BillOh 13 Posted April 24, 2009 I sitll get hiccups if I eat to fast, but I remember that healing state. My doctor told me relax they will pass. The worst thing to do it tense up, that increases the chance of causing slipping while your still in the healing phase.

Abbykins 0 Posted April 30, 2009 I was also banded last May and I get hiccups after every meal it seems. They usually only last for the half hour until I can have some Water or crystal light. But I never had hiccups before my surgery. Mine are really high-pitched and don't hurt. I just try to laugh mine off.
