Any Band-Over-Bypass people here?

Recommended Posts

I had RNY 12 yrs ago and have regained some back. I am seriously considering getting the band. Was wondering if any others who had bypass and are now banded.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

MC

Hello MC, welcome to LBT!

No, I'm "just' band. I was talking to my surgeon and he said that they are seeing an up-tick in people who've had one or another of the different bypasses, but who are now getting the band as well. He explained that the problem is that the pouch y'all have will get stretched out at the bottom, but that because the botom of your pouch empties into the intestine that is is causeing probelms for some poeple. The problme is a back flow out of the intestine into the stomach.

This is not the case with all the time, but one of the reasons that RNY et al. have a band revision. The other main reason is that people start gaining weight back after a period of time. Because they don't have the utiltiy of adjustability, they are stuck.

If you don't have a doctor you can contact Imamed and they can give you alist of doctors that do the band over RNY proceedure. Not at doctors do this. I also know that Walter Lindstrom at www.obestiylaw.com has had this done. Best of luck to you~Mandy

I wasn't aware that this could even be done. My LapBand doctor told me that she gets requests from bypass patients on a daily basis asking her if she can band them and she always says no she can't.

She explained that once the bypass is done, it's done. She said that the stomach has changed so much that there is no way to safely band it.

Maybe she/I am wrong, but I'd definately be asking ALL of the right questions, and getting all of my ducks in a row before attempting to get a band over a bypassed stomach. The thought alone scares even me!

Im just having hard time with all this "its a tool" "slow weightloss" stuff.

Ok here is my honest true heartfelt real deal.

I was unable to control myself when it came to eating before and this is a tool but so was everything else-if I could do it myself then I would have-this is not making much difference in my behavior Im a food addict period.

Alatina with this being said why do you think the bypass would be any different? You still have a pouch and if you are a food addict you have a much easier time of stretching your pouch by overeating with the bypass then the band, the bypass pouch, once it is stretched it will not go back and you will be able to eat more ammounts of food unlike the band we can continue to adjust so we can continue to eat less. In my opinion either bypass or band , they are both tools we still have to do some headwork. I personally have known too many who have had bypass to either have major complications from the bypass or they havegained their wieght back after 1-2 years out due to their pouch being stretched and being able to eat more. I find comfort knowing I can always control the ammounts of food with the band by getting it tightened.

alatina, I understand what you are going through (even though I do not have the band yet). I somewhat feel the same about myself, that maybe the band will not work for me or maybe it will work too slowly, because I have issues with food. However, I want you to know that one of the things that is helping me right now is OA meetings. I started attending them a few weeks ago, and so far, they have been a GREAT source of support and encouragement. So you might want to look into attending a meeting or two (if you never have) to get an idea of how the program works. If you become interested and need or want any further info., just let me know. Take care.

Alatina I understand what you are saying. I was just banded on August 29th and I am going through girlfriend!!! I mean this liquid diet is playing with my head. I know that I am only gonna be on this for 2 weeks, then mushies, then soft foods, then soft solids etc for 6 weeks. In essence 6 weeks is not alot of time but for an overeater it is a lifetime. I look at food and instantly my mouth waters hungry or not. I have to really battle my head demons. If you are looking for something that will just make the weight disappear without you managing your eating habits you are not being realistic. This band is a tool. It will not let you eat more than the allowed per sitting without giving you a signal that enough is enough. I think your mind is playing games with you. You are losing weight but it seems hard because you have to take accountability for the weight loss or not loss. Maybe you have cheated so what. Everyday is a new day. I hope that you realize that you are stronger than your urges. I am dealing with this now more intimately. I am responsible for my size and what I eat or not eat. If I want this band to work I have to work with this band. That's just the way it is.

It will get better just hang in there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
