From consultation to surgery, time line?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am in Ontario and I am considering lap band surgery.

Once you have your first consultation how fast pace does this move before get go into surgery?

I know this may have very different answers depending on where you are and who you go to but I guess im looking for a time line so im a bit more prepared and do not have to use any shocked faces when i go in for my consultation lol.

depends on clinic/surgeon with no clinic. My time was 6 weeks as I had to go on a pre op diet to shrink my liver before surgery. Your weight I think determines how long the pre op (if any) diet is.

A lot of this depends on what "hoops" you have to jump through to get approval. Here, it took me 101 days from consultation with the surgeon until surgery day. But I could have trimmed that back a few weeks because I had my surgery correspond with a vacation from work. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I had my surgery at the Surgical Weight Loss Centre in Mississauga ON. The clinic Dr’s and staff are awesome. Like Doddie said a lot depends on how long you will need to be on the pre op diet. In many cases I have read on the clinics message board people have been banded as little as two to 3 weeks after their consultations. There are 3 Dr’s at the clinic so the wait is shorter than most clinics. Check out as many clinics as possible and make sure that you are comfortable with the surgeon and staff. Also check out their web sites and read what the patients have to say about the support and after care that is provided. I have never regretted going to Dr Cobourn at the SWLC. It was the best decision I ever made. Good luck and let us know when you are getting banded.

Yes the wait time is pretty short at The Surgical Weight Loss Centre in Mississauga. I can't say enough great things about my clinic and their aftercare support.

I was banded at TLBC (now Slimband). From the time of my consult, I could have booked the surgery for 2 weeks later, after doing the pre-op diet. It was due to my schedule that delayed it for a few more weeks after that.

I was banded at TLBC (now Slimband) too. My process was 5 weeks, but took that long only because I had some commitments to get through first.

I was banded at Slimband (formerly TLBC) and it took 2 months due to insurance approval. If you are self pay though you should be able to get in as soon as your pre-op diet allows.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen someone get insurance to pay. Are you in Ontario? What insurance company do you have?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
