100 lbs. gone! But...what do I do about the GERD?

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone. I was banded 6/24/2006 and have lost 100 lbs. Over the last 2+ years, I've reached the 100 mark 3 times but have then begun suffering from GERD to the extent that I wake up every hour on the hour at night coughing, aspirating, and unable to catch my breath. I've had the band deflated twice; gained back 40 lbs. twice; and made it back down again, only to have the situation repeat itself. My surgeon doesn't seem to have a clue ... other than to fill or deflate. Has anybody else experienced this phenomenon???;)

Have they ever tried just a small unfill? Like .5cc or less? You have all the symptoms of being too tight (night cough, reflux) but I can see you really don't want a significant unfill. Sometimes as little as .2cc removed can make the difference between where you are and where you want to be. The situation you're in happens a lot... and should just require a small adjustment to correct the problem. I would ask the doctor to remove .2 or .3 and see what happens.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
