Calling all who had surgery in MEXICO

:tt1: Hi! I am looking for a good surgeon in Mexico. I am interested in the "medical tourism" program. Anyone have their procedure done with Dr. Arturo Rodriguez from Monterrey, Mexico. Thanks

What type of surgery are you planning on having? I had a revision from the band to the sleeve a little over 2 weeks in Mexico with Dr. Aceves. I can attest to the fact that the care was excellent, the hospital was clean and modern, and the surgery was a success.

you need to decide if you need malabsorption or not. if restriction only is what you need, Dr. Aceves has lots of experience with VSG - I had my sleeve done by him last August and it couldn't have gone better. :tt1:

I want a sleeve or bypass. Nota band because I do not think my body will do well with a foreign object.

Do you have a lot of weight to lose? Are you a volume eater or a junk food eater or both? The sleeve is a restrictive weight loss surgery (as is the band). The bypass is a restrictive AND a malabsorptive procedure and requires some life long changes. Have you decided which is best for you? Once you decide, it will be easier to make a choice concerning what surgeon is best for you.

I am a junk, volume, emotional eater. What would you suggest is best?

I prefer Dr. Aceves.

I like the fact that he makes a small, tight sleeve and he's never had a sleeve leak in over 500 sleeves.

And he's FACS.

Do you have a lot of weight to lose? If you have the sleeve, 60 to 80% of your stomach is removed. THAT gives you restriction as the amount of food you can consume is markedly reduced. If you have gastric bypass, the size of your stomach is reduced (restriction), the pyloric sphincter at the bottom of your stomach is removed so food dumps into the intestine, and some of your intestines are cut out resulting in malabsorption. The amount of malabsorption depends on how much intestine is removed.

I did not want the dumping syndrome or the malabsorption but some people need both.

I had a gastric sleeve in Mexico by Dr. Almanza in January and am down 60 pounds and loving it! Off the insulin and all the other medications that I had to take related to my obesity. The doctor was excellent, the facility extremely clean and the care was fabulous! I would highly recommend them and the procedure! Good luck to you!

I agree, there is no way I would risk NOT going to a real hospital. Having surgery and recovering in a clinic is not safe... here or abroad.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
