:) So I was at work today and waiting for a patient who was running late and reading a book and chewing some gum. I'm in my 2nd week of liquids post banding and feel like I have really icky breathe and a bad taste in my mouth all the time, so I drink tons of Water but the gum was really helping. sugar free of course. Anyway my patient finally popped in with his family and startled me into moving around really fast and getting things together for his test. About five minutes into the test I suddenly realized I had SWALLOWED my gum! I didn't even think twice about it when it happened but then I started panicking because I remembered my band and I got worried. Really worried. However it's been about five hours and so far so good. Has anyone had an experience with swallowed chewing gum?

Nope, thank goodness. If it were stuck, you'd know it by now. I suppose it could still be in the uper pouch? Seems unlikely. Have you had anything to eat or drink? Any problems? If not, then the gum wad got past the band okay. Whew! Lucky you!

we were told not to chew gum at all. i forgot all about my band and chewed a piece for about 15 min and spit it out when i realized what i was doing....i had a stomach ache from all the gas in my stomach from chewing the gum.hard lesson to learn. gas x chewables ARE my friend.

Yes my doctor has told me chewing gum will produce more gas and he wasn't lying , I used to have the worst gas pains from the gum but never knew why now since I no longer chew gum, my gas pains are minimal

Thanks guys. I read over my instruction sheets and nothing about gum. I had some Soup a while ago and it went down fine. And I don't have any gas, so, thank heavens, I guess I was lucky on that one! I think I'll move on to breath mints.

Chewing gum makes you produce more spit, which makes you swallow more, plus sugar free gums have manitol / sorbitol in it which is a sugar alcohol and that alone can cause alot of gas.

I was wondering about chewing gum while banded.. guess I don't have to ask LOL.

Nes, I'm glad you passed the gum, I can't imagine what that would have felt like if you didn't ICK !!!! Thanks for posting about your experience.

Last week, I too swallowed a piece of gum and freaked out. Luckily no sticky sticky--Lol. I think I'll pass on the gum from here on out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
