Going on first weekend getaway since surgery - HELP!!

Recommended Posts

My family and I are spending a weekend at the beach house. These trips have always been full of food...going out to great little restaurants, barbecuing, eating Snacks at the beach all day. Needless to say, it will really put my new lifestyle to the test. So far, I've been able to eat everything with no problems and sickness whatsoever but have made the right choices in terms of amounts and foods, which may be why. Normally that would be good, but I'm concerned that not experiencing any of those typical side effects will hurt my willpower. I could really use some words of wisdom and support as I launch into my first real trial. BTW - I was banded March 31, and have lost a total of 32 pounds pre and post surgery.

Christy, I am in a simmilar time frame as you, as I was banded on March 27th. I too went on my first long weekend trip this past weekend with my husband to the mountains. I planned ahead and bought my food like yogurt, cottage cheese, and turkey lunch meat then packed that into a cooler. That way I had my Breakfast and lunch food with me at the hotel, which meant I had no need to go get stuff from a bad source. We did go out to eat for dinner, my first time since surgery, and I made a meat and veggie choice.

Like you said, it is your new lifestyle and more than likely you won't even feel temptation, because this new lifestyle has become habit. My best advice is equip yourself with healthy Snacks and try to make good choices.

Don't expect to loose over that weekend, but you should be able to maintain at the same weight. I also made a point not to take my scale with me, b/c I didn't want to obsess over not loosing. You can do it!!! Good luck and most importantly have fun!!icon10.gif

Beach House = ocean = LOTS of seafood! Fresh fish, fresh shrimp. Order it grilled or broiled dry (without butter). Salads. Avoid all the potato and hush puppy orders. YOU CAN DO IT!!! I went on a cruise 4 weeks after surgery. Ordered the grilled snapper that was offered every night on those nights that there wasn't another entre that was an acceptable choice. Salads. No bread. You'll take just as long to eat as everybody else because they'll eat fast and you won't. Focus on the people at the table, not the food on your plate.

If you do slip up and eat something that you're not supposed to you're right on the beach. Go for a nice long walk.

Thanks everyone for your response. The weekend worked out well. I was able to eat (splitting childrens menu items with my 6 year old.) Everything went down okay, except for some dry chicken:crying: and I even lost weight! Yay. I did find that I truly missed eating like everyone else...gorging on yummy bad food. Does that go away with time?

I know from my experience, my attitude about the "bad yummy foods" changed. I'm almost 6 months out, and over halfway to goal. I have good restriction, so when I want to eat something in the "BYF" category I just take a bite or two. I don't have room for alot of it, and I don't feel the need to eat the whole plate, plus dessert!

And, looking in the mirror at my healthier, leaner body is motivation enough to keep my on track. Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
