Second Lapband failure - now considering BPD

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded in 2004 and all went well until early 2008, when the band slipped and was replaced. The band slipped on my honeymoon in Phuket would you believe it - a scary experience I can tell you! At my best I was down to 89kg from a start weight of 122 kg. Since the band was replaced it has caused trouble and now I have severe reflux and esophagus dilation, even though I have no Fluid in the band. I am now 106 kg and rising.:sneaky:

Now I am considering a Bilio Pancreatic Diversion (BPD) as the band is no longer effective and cannot be replaced again.

Has anyone else been down this path, moving from a lap-band to a gastric bypass?

I would like to hear from anyone who has had to go down the BPD path so I can see if this is the right thing for me to do.

Is there a specific support group for gastric bypass? I've searched, but can't seem to find one. Any info would be most appreciated.

Hi, if you mean why did it slip, I don't really know. To much getting stuck perhaps? If you want to know the symptoms, suddenly I could not hold anything down, including Water and starting getting very bad reflux at night. Once the restriction was removed, the symptoms dissappeared.

I am being re branded because my band slipped. The symptoms were pain in the back around the band area and the biggest was pain when I ate. Like someone was scratching my insides.

My doctor told me that any pain near or around the band must be invesitgated. I had not been to see him for 5 years because everything was fine, I thought.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
