Why do they say carbon beverages cause the pouch to stretch and you can't have them any longer after surgury?

Is this for all the surgury's? I am trying to understand why it stretches the pouch - does it do that before also? I am having VSG so curious if they mean for the band or VSG also? Thanks :()

I'm not sure about the VSG. Maybe you would get more responses if you asked this question specifically in the VSG section on the homepage? Good luck!

My dietition says that you can have soda a year after the band. She told my friend that she could have it every so often now and she has been banded for 8 months. I guess that you need to ask your Dr. Good luck!

First of all, what is VSG? I don't think I have ever heard of it. Second of all, the carbonation is suppose to stretch your pouch I think because it bloats your stomach. I talked to my doctor at my last visit (in Feburary) and he told me if I make sure it is caffeine free, diet, and I shake the fool at out it to get the carbonation out (make it flat), it is ok to drink soft drinks.

Ask your surgeon! That is the safest route for you.

I was just thinking about this no carbonation rule. What I don't understand is since it is a liquid then it should just go right through your band into your stomach. So I don't get why they say that the carbonation will stretch your pouch. I would think that would only happen if you drank too soon after eating when you still have food in your pouch.

THEY don't say that. Some doctors do, some don't.

My thinking is THEY really don't know for sure and it's just a belief. I'm a soda pop drinker and do not have a stretched pouch....and believe me, if anyone would have a stretched pouch for sodapop...it would be me.

I have heard that continuing to eat too much can stretch the pouch....but I don't know for sure.

We were told 6 months, but even after we rarely do. The main issue I believe is gas pressure. Picture shaking a 2 liter bottle that is 1/3 full. Then picture shaking a 2 liter bottle that is full. Your stomach is smaller so it fills faster, drinking fast is like shaking the bottle. Like food, you have sip slowly.

Thank you all for our responses!

VSG is an option other than the band which is what I am doing.

It is a Vertical Sleeve - part of the stomach is removed and the muscle part of the stomach is left "sleeve" making your stomach smaller. No re-routing of inners like Bypass. You will see a number of people that have started with the band and gone to the sleeve but I am just going right to the sleeve. Banding is definately not an option for me.

The Carbon thing relates to a pouch so I wondered if it was also for the sleeve.

I was told three months after surgery before I could try carbonated drinks. I have been naughty and tried them before (though I often stir most of the bubbles out). I've had no issues. I just burp a lot!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
