Can someone tell me how to figure what "50 percent of your excess weight" is?

Recommended Posts

I know that I have seen this explained before but I cant find anything online about how to figure this out. It seems like whenever you try to find out what weightloss is expected, best case scenario, is 1-2 lbs per week or 50 percent of your excess weight. So does this mean that if I am 100 lbs over my ideal weight I will lose 50 lbs? Thanks to anyone who can explain this to me:smile2:.

Take what you weigh. Subtract from that what you "should" weigh. Whatever that figure is, divide it by 2.

For example: Say you weigh 400 and should weigh 100.

400-100= 300 (your excess weight) 50% (or 1/2) of that is 150.

50% of your excess weight is an AVERAGE. Many people lose all of their excess weight (if they are compliant and exercising) while there are some that don't lose anything (they cheat the band by eating and drinking unhealthily). The average of the compliant folks and non-compliant is 50%. I fully intend to lose 100% of my excess weight. If I didn't plan on that, I would not have this surgery.

My doctor says excess is weight is calculated at 100 pounds for the first 5 ft. then add 5 pounds per inch to get your ideal weight. Your current weight - ideal weight = excess weight

My Dr picked my weight at a BMI of 25, which gave me 63lbs to lose to get there. 50% of that would have been 31.5lbs.

But there was no way I was getting surgery to lose just 31.5lbs. I fully intended to lose 100% of my excess weight.

The makers of the lap band say that at 5 years people have, on the average, lost half their "excess" weight. This is after weight loss and regain. With all WLS types it is very common to have some regain before the end of 5 years. In the case of the band it's averaging out to be about half of your excess weight is gone at that point.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
