Maybe I need a therapist....

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking a lot about the surgery, the post-op diet, the drastic changes. My doctor said that after surgery I'll probably only be able to eat 1/4 cup of food at a time. Suddenly I realized, Hey, but I like to eat! I may need to find something I like just as much to replace the food. I think I might need a therapist or a behaviorist to help me adapt to the new life. If history has shown me anything it's that I always start out well on a new eating and exercising regimen but after about 6 months to a year I "relapse".

I hope I'm not sounding like a downer but I just really want this to work. What do you all think? Have any of you started therapy or support groups? How are your new healthy lives (the diet and exercise) working out for you?

Nothing wrong with councelling help for this or anything else. I have had one for along time and I just vent or whatever and always feel so much better after. I go once every few months and get the stresses out hahaha

I really want to try Yoga. I hear it is amazing for stress and flexibilty etc.

The funny thing is, as weird as it sounds, you won't be interested in food right after surgery. While you are initially healing, you will feel full all the time. Seeking the help from a behavorist, isn't a bad idea because once the swelling goes down and before your first fill you may be able to successfully eat anything and everything and that isn't good. You have to stick to the recomended diet by your doctor - they are all a little different in their plans, but stick with what your doctor tells you and find a support group to attend if you can.

You might be able to eat 1/4 cup of food for a bout 1 week after the surgery but not forever. I eat 1 to 1 1/2 cups of food 3 times a day with a snack. The thing I like most about the band is I can try just about anything with no problem so maybe you will be the same way. Good Luck!

I can eat about 1 cup of food with no problem....more, if part of what I eat is salad. When you are no longer eating large portions of foods, you will be chewing longer. You will learn to enjoy what you do eat and you won't have cravings for more because you will feel full. Then, those situations that make you think you love eating will become more focused on friends/family because you will not be focusing on your plate. It's a whole new world. For everything that changes that you are afraid of, another change which is positive will come along.

Thanks to you all for responding! I really enjoy hearing about everyone's experiences and especially their encouragement. I really am excited to get started. I feel grateful for this forum as a resource when I have questions (or have doubts).

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
