Haitil Hernia

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had their surgery done and had a haitil hernia fixed at the same time? I didn't even know I had one. Does this make the surgrey different or longer to recover?

i had a hiatal hernia fixed when i had my lapband done 2 weeks ago. the doctor said it was a quick fix, and i havent noticed any extra pain or anything. in fact, i am actually feeling really good and havent had much pain.

my doctor said hiatal hernias are actually pretty common. a lot of people have them, but dont even know it. when is your surgery?

A hiatal hernia is where a portion of your stomach pops up through your diphragm. There is already a hole there for your esophagus to go through but the hole is too large with a hernia so the stomach pops through. this results in heart burn and gastric reflux. I had mine repaired with my lapband and my diphragm was sore for several days due to sutures in it. I treated with ice packs and liquid vicodin from my surgeon.

I didn't know I had one either (even with an upper GI). But-before surgery I had to sign a form okaying the repair "just in case"... it is just something that is very common. I had heartburn daily for years and told the person doing the upper GI this and he still didn't find anything. No heartburn since!!! I don't think my recovery was any more difficult. I did have bad gas pains, but that comes with the surgery anyway.

Good luck with your surgery!

I guess I had one too without knowing it. I found out after surgery. I did some research because I had not heard of this kind of hernia before. I guess it is common to not have symptoms and to not know you have one. Well, its fixed now and so I guess I don’t have to worry about it now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
