Hunger Pains

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill almost two weeks ago now, it isn't enough as I can eat essentially what I could eat before my fill, (which, by the way is still drastically less than I could & would eat pre-band). I don't get hungry between meals, i.e. not looking to snack, but come meal time (approximately 4 hours after a meal), the hunger pains are much more evident than ever before in my life, it is actually uncomfortable, not just a gnawing hunger, an actual pain if you will. After eating, no problems, but when I'm hungry boy do I know it. Has anyone else experienced something like this? I know I need another fill to get more restriction, but this one is just uncomfortable when I'm hungry, does that go away? As always, very interested in your experiences.

I'm going for fill #4 next week and I am either hungry or feel like crap because I ate to much to not feel hungry. I don't know what the answer is.

I have no advice for you since I am in your exact same position. I am about 3 weeks out from my first fill. I can go 2-3 hours before the pains come. I told the nurse that my hunger is worse than it ever has been and she seemed shocked (like I was the first person to tell her this before.) The pains are so bad I am almost nauseous. And to make matters worse, I am a dental hygienist and my patients can hear EACH AND EVERY noise my stomach makes. When I get hungry people in the next room know it. The noises are absurd. I have to admit that I haven't been the best about not drinking with meals so I figured maybe that's why I was getting so hungry. The last couple of days I have done much better with the drinking with meals thing (only a few small sips) and I nothing has changed. I will eventually work up to NOT drinking with meals but I'm telling you, that's one of the hardest things for me. So, I don't have an answer but I feel your pain. Literally.

This may be controversial but I suggest that those who have problem with hunger between meals plan a small snack to tide you over. That's what I do and I'm still losing. Mid morning (about 3 hrs after breakfast) I'll have a fat-free yogurt (100 cal). That keeps me satisfied another couple of hours until lunch (Lean Cuisine). Usually about 4 pm I'll have a Protein Bar that will keep me satisfied until dinner. In the evening about 9 or 10 I'll have another small snack. Even with the Snacks I'm still usually less than 1200 cal per day because my meals are small. This may not work for you but I'd rather snack and eat smaller meals than be so starving a mealtime that I over eat or eat too fast and then get very uncomfortable. Find the system that works for you though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
