What makes you stuck?

Recommended Posts

I get stuck 2 to 3 times per week, and I am trying to determine what causes that, when other times, I can eat like a horse! For me, I tend to get stuck on chicken and eggs. I also think that engaging in conversation during dinner can also cause me to get stuck.

I would like to hear from you all about what food or circumstances cause you to get stuck. Maybe we can learn from one another and modify our behaviors accordingly.

I've always had "stuck" issues, since waaaayyy before banding. The same things still cause the problem. I quit eating bread years ago unless it was toasty rather than soft; Bagels were particularly a problem and I don't miss them at all because of the misery they caused me. I love Peanut Butter but it occasionally stuck before and now it sticks every time (I've tried it 3 times), so no more peanut butter:bored: -- I'll miss it but I won't miss getting stuck.

For me it has been chicken and eggs too, but those are staples for me so my diet is skewed towards them. I find that when it happens, it is because I am not paying proper attention to how I eat. If I am talking or distracted, the food goes in faster, gets chewed less and swallowed sooner.

My advice to me and you... Chew, focus, chew, take smaller bites, chew, slow down, chew. Oh and chew some more.

BTW, it happened to me this morning again. I was having an omelet with my kids and chatting with them. I got about half way into it and felt a major stuck situation coming. It was the worst one I’ve had so far. I slimed and PBed for an hour before feeling comfortable again. The bright side is my calorie content for Breakfast was probably half what it normally is, j/k I definitely don’t want to loose weight that way.

Another thing I have decided is to skip the rule about drinking before a meal, well at Breakfast at least. In my first several weeks I would drink 16-24ozs of Water in the morning prior to breakfast and I never got stuck. It also did not effect my weight loss or feeling of satiety between lunch and breakfast. Since getting filled on 4/1 I have attempted to follow the rules and not drink prior but I find I am too tight in the morning. So for me, I am going to go back to drinking before breakfast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
