I'm new to this site -- it looks to be so organized! It's gonna take me awhile to find my way around!

I was banded on February 23, 2003 by Dr. Alan Geiss in Long Island, New York. I lost 50 pounds in the first 5 months. In the three months following, I found that various life issues intervened and my focus on weight loss went out the window. While I dealt with packing up my family and all our belongings, selling our house, buying a new house, finding a good school for my boys, moving 1000 miles away to a city where we know no one, living in a hotel for a month while I re-furbished our 1970's-era house, and trying to keep some sense of normalcy for the kids through all of this ... well, I have to admit that I reverted to old (bad) eating habits and neglected exercise and Water consumption. What I love about the band is that during those three months I lost 8 pounds. At any other time in my life, had I had those bad habits, I would have gained 15! But the band keeps me in check even when I can't think about it.

Now I'm getting settled and have resumed my exercise regimen at Curves, am drinking Water again, and am concentrating once again on making healthy food choices. It feels great to be back on the road to a healthier me.

Other stuff ... I'm a writer and director, working freelance in the musical theater world. I have two little boys, ages 7 and 3, and a fabulous husband who is incredibly supportive. I usually "hang out" on the Spotlight Health board, but over there I read about this board and wanted to check it out. Besides, any place that welcomes GeezerSue has gotta be a great place!

Oh, my! Margie! Hello, you little redheaded sweetie! I've popped in and out of here for the past few months. Mostly lurking. But there are some REALLY smart people here, so I've been tapping their brains. Welcome!

Sue

Margaret,

Nice to see you here! I met you at the Sweet Hollow Diner the first time I came there to find out about the surgery. I'm so glad to hear you are doing well despite your life situations. You were one of the reasons I went with Dr. Geiss (Thank you) and I definitely am not sorry. I had the surgery on Sept. 2nd with him and I am down 26 1/2 pounds since the week before surgery. My weight loss has slowed down the past 2 weeks and I am finding out if I should get a fill or not.

Andy (you remember Andy don't you?) has lost.....(drum roll please).......117 lbs.!!!! He looks great!

I will be attending the get together at the diner this Tuesday.

Hope to talk to you again soon. Keep in touch.

Chris Simione

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
