Hi everyone,

I posted this somewhere else to but I was hoping that maybe there would be someone close to my age or maybe going to school for the same thing that would have any specific advice...

Here goes nothing...

I am 23 and currently in school training to be an opera singer (I still have a really long way to go). I am a little worried about how the weight loss is going to effect my voice. I was wondering if anyone out there is a singer or aspiring singer and has had this done...? I know that my voice will change but because I am younger I will most likely have the time to "fix" anything that happens, well, to a point. I know that everyone is different to...

I see what happened to Deborah Voight and what she went through. Granted she is much older but she did have to take a year off to retrain her entire voice, but she also had the bypass. This is the only thing that is keeping me from feeling really good about the surgery.

Any advice or thoughts are greatly apprecieated...

Hi! I'm a singer and had surgery in December.

The first couple days my throat was sore from the breathing tube, but less than a week later I was singing. My breath support wasn't as good until about 2 weeks out. I had some pain on my right side from them cutting through the muscle during surgery to place the band, so that's why.

I don't have acid reflux or anything, and I've been just fine since the surgery. I've recently hid the 30-lb mark and my voice is still doing just fine; in fact, I'd say it's better. However, I'm only 24, so my voice is still changing somewhat.

I haven't thrown up at all since having the surgery, and I think if that happens a lot it could affect the voice. I've been very fortunate in that way. I also don't have any acid reflux, which can affect the voice as well.

Overall, I feel like it's been a very smooth transition for me. Good luck!

I was gonna post a thread like this! I am a musical theater major and was worried that the drastic change of body type would have an effect. as im sure you know -when singing properly u kinda move things around inside..so i asked my surgeon if i could somehow move the band while singing (explained to him fully what i meant) he said no. so hopefully everything goes good and stays ok. i get banded august 24th. the week before school starts....damn im screwed for 1st semester show auditions. oh well

I was curious about this too! I am a music teacher, and like to do some performing on the side. I don't have a clue about what the weight loss will do, but I have noticed that I get gurgly sometimes when I sing.

Justin, you are getting your band on my birthday!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
