Short Term Prednisone ? Weight Gain??

Recommended Posts

I am going to get banded on April 21st; however, the ENT put me on Prednisone for 10 days due to chronic sinus infection. Will I gain weight using the steroids for 10 days?

Thanks,

You should call your surgeon and let him know about the Prednisone - this medication could affect your ability to recover from the surgery, so I think they will look at your dosing, or may have to reschedule. Mostly I think they would make sure you were taking prednisone during and after the surgery - so that your adrenal system is able to respond to the stress of the procedure and anesthesia.

I have severe asthma, and my surgeon always checks to make sure I am not on it. They will check again I am sure, when I see everyone for the pre-op. I last had to use it in November '08, and I gained some weight, but I think that was mostly as a result of the Holidays, when I ate like I was getting ready for lap-band diet restrictions and getting some things out of my system...

Good Luck. Waiting a little extra time for surgery is not so bad. I started with the Orientation in October, Surgeon visit in November, needing to lose 25-30 lbs (and only losing 16-20 of it), finally getting the surgeon to ok me to schedule the surgery, and gaining a few lbs... now I need to lose again, and in a 2-3 weeks start my pre-op...

ibelieve- thank you for your information :tt2: I've called my surgeon yesterday and he asked me about the dosage and how long I have to be on it.

Here is my dosage:

Day 1&2 - 40 mg

Day 3&4 - 30 mg

Day 5&6 - 20 mg

Day 7&8 - 10 mg

Day 9&10 - 5 mg

I should finished my med on April 17th and my surgery is on April 21st. The surgeon said it is ok. I hope he is right because I do not want any complication. I don't mind postponing it at all since I already got postpone once. I started this journey since June of 2008 and finally is going to get it at April 21st so yes I don't mind if he reschedule at all  I just wanna be healthy for the surgery.

BTW, congrats on your coming up surgery too :)

Thanks again,

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
