34 days post surgery, 13kgs (28lbs) down...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Just found this site and it looks like it's going to be very useful.

I was banded on 4 March 2009 and so far I've lost 13kgs (28lbs).

Most of that loss was right after surgery and I haven't lost much in the last 2 weeks (only 1-2kgs). I think that's because I've been on solids for the last 2 weeks (I know I'm bad but I was getting so hungry and my dietitian sort of OKed it). I have almost no restriction and can eat ANYTHING. I've not had any problems with getting anything down or making it stay down (save one time when I think I ate too fast and it hurt when it was going down, but it DID go down and it stayed down).

I have my 1st post-op appointment with the bariatric GP. In the last few days I've been experiencing and strange feeling in my chest and throat but the funny thing is, it comes and goes and usually goes when I eat. I'm going to ask the GP about this tomorrow - hope it's nothing untoward, like a slip (argh!)

Looking forward to getting to know you all and interested in making some Bandster friends from Adelaide (and beyond).

Love BandedMarch2009 :(

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
