Andrew6 0 Posted April 7, 2009 When I first got my band I did alot of walking I mean alot. I'd walk about 11 to 12 miles a day. Of course as time went on I dropped off (mainly b/c I hate the cold.) Its starting to warm back up and I'm doing my walking again. I walk about 4 to 5 miles right now and usually jog or run 1 or 2. The question that I am having is what is a good pace time for walking? I usually average about 10 to 12 min's per mile. Is that average or below average?
Jachut 487 Posted April 7, 2009 A good pace for you is if you have your heart rate above, say 130 bpm. Whatever pace that is. You sound fairly fit, my guess is you should be running more/walking less if you want to keep improving. You'd be getting to the point where its not POSSIBLE to walk faster but you're not taxing your cardiovascular system much. I cant walk much above 5mph (a 12 minute mile) before I simply must break into a jog. And I find it hard to maintain that walking pace without slowing down as my legs/back get tired, but it doesnt even make me breath heavily, I simply must increase the pace to about 6 mph or more (and thus jog) to get a cardiovascular workout. Although OF COURSE, if you can walk that sort of pace and dont particularly care about getting fitter than that (it'll definitely keep you out of the cardiac ward) and you're weight loss is going how you want it to, then keep up the good work. I just get a thrill out of saying I can run for a whole hour, which is my motivation to do it. And it will boost your loss noticeably, but eventually you adapt to that too. I don't know what the contractors on days would say if they saw me running around the units. They'd probably chit themselves and think they need to follow me. MacMadame 81 Posted April 7, 2009 Wow, I *run* at just under 12 mile per hour. How can you walk that fast?! What you should do depends on your goals. If your goal is to maintain fitness, do what you are doing. If you are still actively trying to lose weight, then as you get more fit, you burn less calories and you need to either increase the time of your workouts or their intensity. If you are trying to get more fit, then increasing the intensity is probably better than increasing the time.

My honest to goodness goal is to look like a freak, LOL:tt2:. I have huge arms and legs and chest and just want to make them bigger. I guess I actually need to cut back on my activity level and work more on weight lifting but I have a weak shoulder from football in high school.
Jaffa 5 Posted April 7, 2009 I have done just the opposite of normal. I have slowed down to 3mph. This allows me to walk for a couple of hours each day. Before when I was doing more, my knee would start to hurt too soon and I would have to quit. I am going for what I can do that will give me the most calorie burn without aggravating my knee. Different people come up with different methods, but in the end calories used are calories used. My method DOES NOT however contribute to what they call cardiovascular fitness. I use swimming which doesn't bother my knee for cardiovascular fitness.
