Who does 1/4 cup of food work for?

Recommended Posts

Ok I am 7 weeks post-op. Had my 1st fill last week of 5cc's. I found out I don't tolerate Cereal w/ milk that well. Other than that though I can still eat more than the 1/4 cup of food recommended. I am worried I will stretch out my pouch. I don't eat as much as I used to that's for sure, but I am able to eat more than I would like. Do any of your really only eat 1/4 cup of food per meal???

Some get down to 1/4 cup like myself and others do not. Theres some people that at their sweet spot they eat 3/4 cup of food. It also depends on the type of food you're consuming.

Example. For Breakfast today I had a mushroom/veggie burger patty by good starts slightly under 2 oz. I was stuffed to the gills. snack 3 hours later was 14 almonds... STUFFED again. 3 hours later lunch was 1/4 cup of Soup. I am still stuffed and it's 2 hours since lunch. I am good till dinner.

It took me 4 fills to get to this point and it was about 6 months post op.

I am absolutely stuffed with 1/4 cup, but I am at my sweet spot after several fills. You won't be happy with 1/4 cup after 1 fill. It will take you several more fills to get there.

Thank you all for the posts!!! I was starting to get worried like there was something wrong w/ me. I can eat about a cup of food right now, but notice I need to keep a better track of the type of foods I'm eating.

I'll offer a bit different perspective. I stopped eating set meals (you know... Breakfast, lunch, Dinner) Instead I eat small amounts all of my waking day.

I have an aggressive exercise schedule as well and that allows my total calorie intake to be higher. On average, I consume over 2000 calories a day. Somedays it will be a bit less - and others well more than 2000.

By eating frequently, I keep my metabolism cranking. One thing I have found out is that the longer I go between eating - the higher the chances that I'll make a poor food choice, eat too fast, or overeat. So this style of "grazing" works well for me.

Brad, thanks for your input. I have also been told to eat frequent smaller meals to keep metabolism up. Instead, if I don't I think my body just clings to the food I do get and stores it. I think I will try this approach. Of course my caloric intake won't be as high as yours since my workout right now consists of a treadmill for 30min lol but, I think the concept is right for me.

.... This is the approach that's gotten me to triple digit loss territory. You do have to keep an eye on the calorie intake when you eat this frequently, but once you have a handle on it - it's old hat. Exercise more - eat more.

Good luck!

Brad

I've never eaten that little and I've been at goal for a good 18 months now. My intake at a meal if I havent snacked is more like a cup. Actually lately I can eat even more, I think I need a tiny top up.

I'd starve to death on 1/4 cup unless I ate every hour.

Realistically though, for the health of my band and to avoid pouch stretching and other nasties, I try to eat small amounts more often. The hard part about that is thinking of it as snacking and thus reaching for the Cookies instead of proper food that you would eat at meals.

But 1/4 cup 3 x a day? No way, I'd pass out. I eat about 1800 calories a day, even 2000.

And I know you exercise too. I think that makes a difference. When I am really exercising, my matabolism is racing because I am starving and eat a lot more.

The times I've been hurt and couldn't exercise, seems I didn't eat as much. But I have to agree, I've never only eaten 1/4 cup of food. I would passout too I think.

I eat around 4 to 6 oz at a meal (less during the day). I just try and make healthy choices and exercise!

i was banded on march 20th and i don't have a fill yet. I can comfortably eat 1/2 cup of food at a time, if i eat more than that i get nauseated. I eat every 2-3 hours and have lost 12lb since surgery and 18 total. i think a 1/4 cup is too little to get all your calories in. if u don't eat enough calories it can stall your weight loss.

good luck all

I eat 3-4 oz at each meal along with one snack a day. 4 oz is half cup. I feel Im at pretty good restriction and everytime i try to go to 6.5 in my 10 cc band, i get shut up and have to get unfill. so right now im at about 5.75 and 3-4 oz is cutting it for me. I feel im at a sweet spot since i dont get stuck on anything but the amount of my meals are very small. im gonna stay here for awhile .

wow thank you all so much!!! I am happy that I am not the only one who thinks this amount is a little ridiculous but I questioned myself since I am new to this whole lifestyle. I was banded in Mexico and my Dr. there gave me a diet until week 6. Then I was on my own. I went and got filled through Fill Centers USA and they EMPHASIZE through all of their literature and their Dr's that 1/4 is the way to go. So I was confused. But thanks to this website, I am glad you all are here for me!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
