Walmart & Death Bites (aka Popcorn chicken)

Recommended Posts

Happy Sunday everyone. I wanted to share my story so maybe others can not experience the same thing. I am on my third fill, 6.5 ccs in a 10-12cc band.

I went to Walmart for some groceries. Boyfriend wanted some chicken from the deli. I hadnt eaten since 11am and it was nearly 7pm. So, I figured I would get me some popcorn chicken. Seriously, they are the size of a penny. They come in this cup, with a little flip lid. I thought I would try few on my way to the checkout. Big MISTAKE! I ate 3. I knew I was in trouble. It just sat there. Then it started to hurt. I started to take deep breaths. The sweat started to bead on my forehead. Seriously, the lady in front of the couple in front of me had so much in her cart, that it took two carts to hold the groceries bagged...and they had to call for help.

I started to panic. Did I ditch my cart and go throw up in Walmart's bathroom? I ruled that out. I probably stood in line for 10 minutes. Breathing. Sweating. Cursing my stupidity in my head. I checked out and started walking towards the car. At this point I was looking for a place to throw up. Bushes? No, I could make it to my car. I threw the stuff in my trunk, grabbed an empty bag out of my trunk, opened my door, sat down behing my wheel and threw up in the bag. Horrible. I made it home, threw up in the yard. Threw up for a few hours off and on. After this was all said and done, I took a tiny sip of Water...threw that up too! I was really nervous at this point. So, I decided if I woke up on Saturday morning and still couldnt swallow Water, I would go to the ER. I woke up fine yesterday. Had yogurt for Breakfast and then Boyfriend and I went out to eat for an early dinner. I had a cup of Soup and some of Traceys hamburger meat. Everything appears to be fine!

Lesson? NO POPCORN CHICKEN OR TRYING NEW THINGS IN PUBLIC.

I can relate. I threw up Mexican on a street in NYC and up muffin on myself on a train. I think the train might win as the those worst LB public display ever. I vowed then that I would never eat anything "new" in public again. What I learned later was that it wasnt the newness, it was the fact that I waited too long to eat.

I need to eat ever few hours, if I wait too long- I want to scarf it down too fast and then it wants to come back up I have been doing this and it seems to work for me.

Sounds like the PB won. Fried chicken, so it was bready and greasy on the outside AND the chicken was dry I bet. You were really hungry because you waited too long to eat, so you were behind the 8 ball before you put the first piece in your mouth. Happened to me under similar circumstances. I had waited almost 7 hours since Breakfast and was ready to eat just about anything. In an attempt to be good, I went to Arby's and got a regular roast beef sandwich and an iced tea. I ate about 3 bites of the meat (ditched the bread) and I thought I chewed it pretty good but, uh-oh. It came right back up. I continued to slime for about 20 minutes. It was as much eating fast and maybe not chewing well as anything else.

 Well, let me tell you what I did yesterday. I baked a whole chicken and roasted some root vegetables for our dinner. The chicken was VERY moist, but guess what I just had to have a bite of?? Yes, the skin!! UCK!! I will never do that again.....after feeling it just sit there for several minutes I began to slime like never before. Finally I threw up and threw up. I was just banded in February and this was the first time I had actually thrown up. Kinda scared me, feel okay today, have taken it easy on what I have eaten. Don't know if I am sore from the wretching or if I could have " messed something up" in there. Any chance I could have done any damage to my band?? Thanks!

Oh it totally one. It was the weirdest thing...it was like a mouthful of foam (at least the first one in my car). I had waited too...it had been like 8 hours since I ate.

Thanks for all the replies...its so helpful to hear what has gotten others in the same situation.

For some reason chicken seems to be the most difficult thing to eat. Last time I tried it I was on my way to work and super hungry. Needless to say I spent the drive to work throwing up and sliming into a plastic bag. Gross. I've tried chicken a few other times and had similar problems. I think I'm just gonna stay away from it for a few months.

Its probably not even the chicken you know, its eating without really focussing. If there's one thing I cant do its eat without sitting down to do it properly. If I eat properly, I can eat anything most of the time. But mindlessly putting things in my mouth whilst doing something else, forget it. And if I've got five minutes to eat lunch because I'm running late - I dont eat. I cant hurry it either.

And for some reason if I go that long without eating I will always have trouble - I think I eat too fast coz its been so long but also being hungry and going without food tends to make me really tight.

Like always, I think you are right (you are very wise in all your posts). I ate a chicken breast tonight off the grill. No problem. Early today though I ate a few animal crackers and...PROBLEM....other times when I am paying more attention, I can eat them just fine. But, I just popped them in my mouth in passing.

The same thing happened to me. Me and my girlfriends who are all in their 30's bought tickets to New Kids on the Block and we were so excited because we all have kids and dont get out much anymore. Well none of my friends knew that I had the surgery and we went to a restaurant for appetizers. I had some amazing spinach and artichoke dip but for some reason it just didn't sit well. We got to the concert and I felt so uncomfortable so I went to the bathroom. Well the line was at least a mile long! I stood there for at least ten minutes thinking I was going to throw up right there and than two of the girls I went with walked up and got in line with me and of course I choose that exact time to not be able to keep it in anymore!!!! I ran to the garbage can and threw up right there in front of everyone! Of course they all thought it was because I was drinking, but really I only had one drink. I WILL NEVER TRY SOMETHING NEW IN PUBLIC AGAIN!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
