Why do post-op diets vary so much??

Recommended Posts

When I went to my appointment with the nutritionist, she gave me a booklet put together by my Dr that has been like a bible to me. It has my diet schedule for pre-op, example- Day 1-8, Clear Liquids...and a list of food I can have, and so on til I'm six weeks post-op and into my maintenance plan. I have been following it per Dr's instructions. At my 2 week follow-up appt. they gave me the literature that came with the band, along with some other stuff and the diet the Dr gave me is verbatim of the literature.

My question is... the Dr's, I am assuming, are all trained to put the band in the same way at the same place, but why are the diets so different? I have read on here people saying their Dr said they can eat "regular" food their second week. My opinion... that's just setting them up for going back to their old habits of eating "regular" food.

Just wondering if anyone had some opinions... thanks!

My doctor is one of those that doesn't require Clear Liquids past day two and mushies as soon as you can handle them after full liquids. I don't think he's setting me up, because he does say focus on Protein first and don't eat crap. I think the differences in post op diets comes from what the doctor has seen work. They probably make dietary adjustments based on how their patients are progressing, historically.

I was allowed mushies on day 8 and by day 14 regular food. I am doing fine and haven't had any problems. Each doctor is different, I guess.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
