Out Patient or overnight stay?

Recommended Posts

I am just beginning to research this and have read tons and tons of stuff but the one thing I haven't found the answer to is if the Lap Band surgery is done as an outpatient or if you have to stay over in the hospital? Does it depend on your dr and/or your insurance?

Thanks!

My surgery was at 1pm and I was comfy at home by 4:30pm.

Before I made my choice, I called at 10-12 lapband offices / centers and each had different options from a couple of hours stay at a surgical center, to an overnight stay in the hospital.

I had an overnight stay at a hospital - glad to have had the overnight option; however, I could see how I could easily have gone home in a few hours and rested very well for several days.

Best of Luck!

Thanks for the answers! That explains why I haven't found anything that said it was an out patient or overnight.

Had to stay over night as I have sleep Apnea, with a CPAP machine. Had to bring machine with me and use it at the hospital. Nurses talked and laughed all night so it would have been better to go HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love this topic because at first I was furious that I had to stay overnight. I was dreading it leading up to my surgery ("I'll be more comfortable at home, I don't want a roommate," etc.). I begged the nurses as they wheeled me into the OR...

Boy, am I thankful I had to stay - I couldn't have gone home that day if I wanted to. A pain pump I could push every seven minutes, constant attentiveness...I felt great...until they took out my IV and sent me on my way 24 hours later. Looking back, I would have spent another night if they would have let me! The pain really set in at home. Kudos to the people who went home - I do not think I could have.

My doc requires an overnight stay and does a barium swallow in the morning. I'd love to be at home the same day though. This is also the first time being away overnight from my 14 mo old. I know he is in good hands, but I'll miss him.

My doctor requires an over night stay if you are age 50 or above or have a medical condition (sleep apnea etc.) that may require a little more monitoring. I have not been banded yet still getting all the pieces in place but I don't have a problem with this requirement (I a am over age 50).

Found out that my dr. does out patient.

I have to say that I am not sure how I feel about this. Of course it is always nice to be at home in your nice comfy bed, but it is also nice to have that pain pump if that is done. But in my experience if you are just on pain pills it is better to be at home and not at the mercy of the overworked nurses. And it can be good for the family to not be taking care of you that first night, but when they wake you up at all hours to get vitals in the hospital that is annoying.

So I will roll with whatever happens!

I will be staying overnight just one night, that is just what my hospital does.

I was scheduled for outpatient since my surgery was at 7:00 a.m. However, doc found a large hiatal (sp?) hernia which had to be repaired plus my blood pressure wouldn't stabilize so I spent the night. Aside from nurses checking in on me every hour or so, it was the best rest I've gotten in months:smile2:. I could have gone home because the pain was absolutely minimal.

From what my surgeon has told me....if you are a self pay...then it is done as a day surgery to keep your cost low. If you are an insurance pay, they require an over night. Of course each policy no doubt varies, and if you have the surgery done out of the country, I would think an overnight stay is expected. I am having my surgery June 12th and thank goodness my insurance is going to cover me!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
