I am on my liver shrink diet and I am to have a Protein Shake for Breakfast, fruit mid morning, Protein Bar lunch, fruit mid afternoon, salad and 3 oz leat meat for supper, fruit and 6 unsalted crackers. fruit for evening snack. My surgery is April 6. Would it hurt to have a little extra lean meat? I am talking boneless skinless chicken strip marinated in fat free italian dressing done in the george forman. What do you think? :welldoneclap:

My diet called for 97% fat free deli meat. I think I did have some chicken from Georgie Boy and I was fine.

I am a month away from surgery so I honestly am just not as experienced as others on here. But you are ONLY 2 days away from surgery.. why throw a wrench in it now?? You are so close to the light at the end of the tunnel!!!! Be strong and stick with that your Dr. prescribed for you.

Good luck!

I agree with Sassysara....stick to what your doc prescribed! It's just chicken; so not worth risking your surgery for! Probably it would be ok but the doc gave you your diet for a reason. Just hang in there!

Just FYI because of reading posters here who said "it won't matter" and "it won't hurt" (and I'm sure they were well intentioned, not trying to be mean) I "cheated", lost 15 pounds (YAY) and did NOT get my band the first time because for me, it DID matter and it DID hurt. So please...just hang in there. It is not worth it to come to in recovery and be told you didn't get the band.

thanks I guess I will just be tough. Restless monkey did the doc not know going into the surgery that your liver was thick?? Don't you think that they should do a xray before hand to see if this is the case. I too am afraid of this. I think that my doctor will open you up and do it if they cannot do it lap.

YES he knew That's why he gave me a 3-week long preop diet! BUT I cheated. I didn't tell him. I lost 15 pounds; he thought I'd done as he asked, but I didn't.

It wasn't his fault, it was mine for not doing as he asked.

And yes I read on here poster after poster who either didn't have to do a preop diet, or "cheated" and it was fine, or "their doc told them not to worry" so I figured I'd be ok. WRONGO! So do what your doc says, not what others are told, not what others "get away with". Because you may be ok but if, like me, you aren't, it is dreadful.

And my doc said "I could've opened you up but I know you had nursing school starting at the end of August and you would not have been able to attend because of a lengthy recovery" so I'm glad he didn't "open me up" The recovery is MUCH longer, the surgery is MUCH more drastic. SO not worth it!

I didn't ask him "How do you know!!!" LOL

I assume blood work, GI results, ultrasound results, his experience.

The "take home" for me, is: If I had done what he told me to, I would've gotten my band as scheduled and only had 1 surgery instead of 2.

I did what he told me after that. In 2 1/2 weeks I lost 17 MORE pounds and he was successful in banding me. I wish I'd just done as he asked originally.

Just don't eat the extra chicken LOL and you should be fine if you've done as your surgeon asked of you!

I have done very well, just sometimes my salad that I ordered at work for supper may have had more than the 3 oz of lean meat that it was suppose to have. Other than that I have done great.

The only tests that I have had done was blood work, ekg and chest xray Liver function on blood work was great. Hope this means that it will be okay.

Remember the old saying "Don't borrow trouble"?

Well...Don't! If you've done as you were asked you're bound to be fine. Just remember as you go through this that while I know people are truly truly trying to be nice and helpful when sharing on here, if you get advice that contradicts your doctor, proceed carefully. Doc's aren't gods and aren't always right, but if you trust them enough to cut you open etc..then don't cavalierly toss aside their advice about dieting etc :welldoneclap:

You'll be great I'm sure!

Sorry just saw your last question. No I didn't worry about anesthesia because I'd had my gall bladder removed in 2003. I was petrified that I would die. I wrote about it just recently so don't want to beat a dead (LOL) horse but ...

I oriented myself immediately in recovery (because you don't feel time pass under anesthesia like you do when you sleep) by looking at the time, I lay still and took deep deep breaths (whether it hurt or not) to clear my lungs, and as soon as they took the mask off of me I started talking to the nurse. In other words I fought to wake up. I refused all except 1 mg of morphine(which she snuck by me LOL) because I wanted to be awake and alert. and my recovery was rapid and smooth with very little pain. I drank as soon as they would let me (water, not juice; less likely to nauseate) and urinated, walked, etc ASAP. I was honestlly so happy to be alive and without that stupid gall bladder! It was OVER! I was very cheerful! I copied that behavior for my 1st and 2nd lap band surgeries and recovered smoothly each time. Only needed tylenol pain meds, slept in my own bed from the start, etc.

I was scared the first time but just decided that I had to have it done, that other people lived through it, and that I needed to quit whining (internally!) and make it an adventure. That type of self-talk works for me (obviously)...so I WAS scared, but not any more!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
