It's whatever your surgeon recommended. Each surgeon has a different protocol. I personally am of the belief that the more experienced the surgeon at doing banding the less they have you pre-op or it could be how high your BMI is. My surgeon does more bypasses so they have a generic two-week liquid diet for band and bypass. My daughter didn't have to do anything except just abstain the night before. She even went to eat Mexican food the day before but her surgeon has done 4k procedures, mine 120. So go by what your doctor told you, not by on here...there's too many variations.

Good luck. Your surgery is on my birthday. Mine is June 1 and my goal was to have it before my birthday. ta-dah!

Hi, My lapband surgery is June 23rd Im really confussed I was told as far as a pre-op diet to keep carbs 30to60g fats under 30g Protein 60g I have not started yet and after reading more about the pre-op diet sounds like I should do more. I need help. Debbie

debbie, don't worry about what other folks are doing, just do what your doc told you to do. I think a lot of the stuff about preop diet depends on your docs personal philosophy. I had first banding Nov. of 2005 and was not told to do any specific diet. I did low carb for a month and lost 17 lbs which gave me a nice start on my journey. It also gave me confidence that I could do what was asked of me after banding. I had a great journey loosing a total of 203 lbs but it did unfortunately culminate in a slippage.

I was unbanded Sept. 2008 but am scheduled for rebanding June 19, 2009. Whoooohooooo I can't wait to get my new tool. Life is so different when you aren't consumed with thinking about food 24-7. The band even changed the way I thought about food. I was not one of those who resented not being able to eat as much as i used to. I loved eating like a normal and food even tasted better. I had hoped to be one of those who could keep it off, but deep down, I knew I would not as I am a stone food junkie. I am so looking forward to being released from this addiction once again.

For anyone reading this, do not let my experience discourage you. The old smaller bands had about a 13% slippage rate and the newer ones the rate is 3% or less. Even if the slippage rate was the same, I would still be doing it again. It has changed my life tremendously:Banane21:

Hi all, well I started my 'liquids only'' this morning, it's not horrible, although my belly is rumbling in protest. I am also suppose to start my exercise program today, however i was told after surgery i would not be doing any exercising except walking for about 4 weeks, but I guess i'll go ahead with what my physical fitness trainer said to do. I can't wait until June Ist gets here!! I'm ready to do this!

Lucky you Nano. Mine is two weeks liquid but I kind of feel this is going to show how well I can sticking to it even afterwards. My only cheating so far (4 days) is just eating more of the Tomato Soup that I can have to begin with. Today, a little lightheaded, nauseous and a light headache. I'm definitely getting in the Protein. I'm allowed two Snacks a day, which to me aren't snacks...they're my dinner..lol. I love ff greek yogurt. So that's one with some splenda added. But I'm headed out to get a Magic Bullet so I can make my own.

Good luck to all on their pre-op diets. Can't believe I'm four days into it already. Next week will go quick because I have three drs appts and busy at work.

Again, good luck

Hey everyone! I've been lurking around this site for a while, but this is my first post ever! I'm getting banded June 24th by Dr. Webber at Great Lakes Weight Loss in Detroit! I am supposed to follow a 7-day VLCD before the surgery consisting mostly of Protein shakes and one sensible meal a day. I am not too worried about sticking to it, because I have done low calorie dieting in the past. I think I might even start the VLCD sooner to jump start my weight loss.

For those of you who are wondering why doctors want you on a diet before the surgery: The purpose is to lose weight in order to shrink the size of your liver. When you are overweight you often have a fatty liver which gets in the way of the stomach during surgery. Youtube the Lap Band surgery and you can see a video of the surgery. Anyway, losing weight helps shrink the liver and reduces the chances of complications during surgery. Even if your doctor doesn't advise you to try to lose weight before surgery, it is definitely not a bad idea. Also, many doctors will refuse to do the surgery at all if a patient gains weight before the surgery, so this might be another reason to stick to a weight loss plan ahead of time. Just my $0.02

Corliss, Thanks for your advice. Goodluck with your next banding. I am scared to death. I really worry I should just do this on my own. I am 5'4" 225lbs. I have had a wt problem all my life. My wt now I feel keeps me from doing alot! and there is also the health issues. So I pray I am making the right choice. My insurance does not pay 1 penny. Thats alot of money approx. 17,500 to be paying for something you are not sure will work. I heard one lady only lost 20lbs. I quess I need encourgement. Thanks, Debbie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
