Getting banded 4-17-09, Need some help

Recommended Posts

I started my liquid diet yesterday and I can physically do this, but mentally I am a mess! I already cried this morning and I want to go home and get in bed for the next 2 weeks.

I am getting banded on the 15th and I cannot wait. I think I just need some reassurance that I am not alone and that I am not crazy.

I have a lot of family and friend support, but I need someone who has gone thru it to help. Thanks!

Kim

Relax! Its normal to be freaked out. I was! Its scary wondering if you are doing the right thing. But , once its over you will know this is what had to be done. I was petrified of going under anesthesia and not waking up. I was scared of what it feel like once it is in. Let me tell you. This is my experience as well as many others:

Bring loose clothes, chapstick, and apillow for sealtbelt on ride home.

You wont know your under anesthesia, surgery takes 45 mins to 1 hour, you wake up, you feel like something is in there, your chest might hurt, they give you sips of Water and send you to recovery.

I was there in recovery for a total of 6 hours, went home that day. You take your pains meds(hardly any pain I had), walked around alot to get rid of gas, which is not like regular gas, it is pain in your shoulders arm and neck, so dont panic. I had Protein shakes for 2 weeks, plus Soup, sugar-free ice pops. I stayed home from work for a week.

You wont get stitches and they cover the incisions with gauze that falls off after 3-5 days and underneath they are covered with (steri-strips) and they fall off about 2 weeks.

I slept in a recliner, took my meds whether I had pain or not because they help you sleep.

Thats it, no big deal. You dont feel the band in your stomach ever. You will never know it is in there. Once you heal, you will feel hungry and it is time for your first fill and it maight not take the first time you get a fill, mine didnt. It wwas agradual thing anf my 3rd fill was a charm. I had my surgery on Oct 16th and I'm down from 272 to 220. Feel good, look good and I'm so glad I did this. Here I am 6 months later and cant believe how fast it went and how scared I was. Time flew and here I am 52 lbs later and so happy I did it. Good luck!

Just stay focused on your goal. The first few days of my liquid diet I was a complete bitch. It'll get easier as the days go on and by the end of the 2 weeks it won't even both you!

You go!

Kim, it is the best decision you have ever made for yourself. I was banded 10/26/07 and I would do it again, not that I need to but it was the best thing I have ever done. Good Luck and God Bless You.

HI, I feel your frustration! I too started the pre-op diet two days ago and am not a happy camper. My surgery is on the 14th this month. I just keep reminding myself this is very temporary and the results will be worth it. I found it helpful to write a list of why I am doing this and read it to remind myself when I get down. I too just want to hole up and hide for the next two weeks. You are not alone.

I will get my band on the 13th and i know how you feel with this liquid diet. Its like what can I have that will satisfy my hunger. Or im I really ready for this band? I have to go on this site to read success stories to feel like I am ready. Do something to keep you busy try not to think of food.

Good luck

Just think of this as a shedding of all the crap that got you to where you are. I was banded on the 3rd of March. I am doing wonderful, but it took 3 weeks after surgery. BUT, that is part of the process it can't be easy or everyone would do it. We are doing this as a last resort to find health. You can and will be fine. Just think thru the feelings to see what is the root. Honey, let me tell you I am. I have felt things that have made me cry and made me what to jump with joy. You are going to win, its going to be hard. Hang in there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
