doodleallday 0 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) I will admit I am in serious desperation for motivation to get the ball rolling. I know exercise is what is holding me back from a higher weight-loss. I know what needs to be done. I just find myself sitting here, day after day, researching assignments and working on my undergraduate thesis (graduation in May, finally!) and I cant seem to make myself carve out time for exercise. I know it will feel good after the initial session(s), but I need help getting there. I realize I may get flammed for begging for a motivational, kind-hearted buttkicking, but what have I got to lose at this point, except more weight! I am heading to check out a local Lifestyle Family Fitness center with my sister tomorrow or Friday, so hopefully I will get motivated just setting foot in a gym after four years of absence. Until then, I ask you for: + Links to success stories + Links to your own blog + Links to motivational articles + Links to excellent "before/after" photos (preferably easy to navigate, unlike the hours I spend crawling through the sticky on LBT) + Words of Wisdom + What got you started? + etc. etc. etc. Edited April 2, 2009 by doodleallday
MacMadame 81 Posted April 2, 2009 My standard advice is to find something you love to do that involves moving your body and not try to psych yourself up to do a more traditional type of exercise you know you'll hate. Of course, if you love the treadmill, that's fine too. But most people think of exercise as something horrible that they have to do -- like going to the dentist. We have to change our thinking. It's not "exercise" it's "fun activities" and it can be anything -- taking a dance class, taking up kick boxing, figure skating (didn't you always want to be Kristi Yamaguchi?), riding bikes with your family on the weekend, even bowling. I have gone a more traditional route but that's because that's what I think is fun. So I bike, run and swim. Three days a week, I do these in a group setting with a coach and 2-3 days a week I do them in the gym. I'm having a blast! Oh and the group activities are essential to me. That's part of my exercising style to include a social aspect. The other thing that is essential is to have goals and to sign up for things so I *have* to train to be ready. Think about whether you want social activities, whether you need goals, whether you do best with a routine or if you mix things up. Then make sure the activity you pick matches your "exercise personality". If you like social, join a club. If you like social and routine, Curves is good. If you like to mix it up or you get bored, consider multi-sports like Triathlon or sign up for a different class at the rec center every month.
SuzanneG 1 Posted April 2, 2009 Well said Mac! You always inspire me! For me, I needed a specific program. I'm a Step1, Step2, Step3 - list checker kind of gal. So the Couch to 5K was perfectly suited for that. I do it at home because I have very little time for anything outside of work, so that helps me too. Little by little I'm adding other things, chin-ups, push-ups, hoola hoop, etc. Good luck and get moving!

Its in my signature below. I was banded on Jan 27th, and my first plateau was enough to get me moving. My doc was very honest with me that the band only works if you work it. I didnt want to go through all of this to not lose. SO, I started walking. Now I hate walking. Before the band I would drive two blocks instead of walking it. But, I started walking 1 mile, and then I added half a mile every week. I walk outside. SO, I did my first 5k yesterday. I took 2nd place in my age group! It felt so good. If I can do it, YOU can do it. It helps you feel better mentally! My boss who is an exercise fiend, always has this response when people say they dont have time "Well, you find time for the things you WANT to do dont you?" Thats a good point. Good luck. You can do this. Some is better than none. If you lived in Pensacola you could walk with me! :smile2:
