Tip for when you get stuck.....

Recommended Posts

the only thing I found that gives me relief when I am stuck is a yoga pose (can't remember the name of it - downward dog maybe?). You stand, bend at the waist and put your hands on the floor (so your upper body is upside down). If you can't go all the way to the floor, use a stool or a chair. Stay in that position as long as you can or until you feel "unstuck". If you need to stand up and then do it again that helps too. It has worked for me EVERY time. I learned it on here, but figured I would re-post with a title that would be easy to find. Also, just eat SLOW and CHEW and you can avoid that stuck feeling.

I had surgery Nov 17, 2008. I am down 60 pounds (267 to 207, 5'8"). I still eat too fast sometimes though, especially when I'm hungry. I know it's going to happen, but sometimes I just can't help myself and have to get that food in me.........ugh

Thank you but that would hurt me worse than being stuck!

Plus I already feel like I can't breathe when stuck. I'd pass out! LOL

HOWEVER Having my husband wham me between the shoulder blades does the trick! :smile2:

I'm going to give that a try! Only when I'm at home of course - I can only imagine the embarrassing looks I would get from thrusting myself into a downward-dog yoga pose in the middle of a busy food court!

The OP is exactly right about eating too fast and not chewing, and I still forget once in a while and I'm 3 months past surgery. While I will try their thought,it might be ackward in a restaurant. My wife can tell when I'm stuck because I suddenly sit up very straight like a bird dog that just caught a scent. This seems to stretch things a bit. Also getting up and walking around helps.

Though I'm by no means a yoga expert, the pose is called Downward facing dog and it's really helpful and almost restful.

I haven't gotten stuck yet (I hope never to) but will keep that in mind.

I love the visual of getting a whack in the back

I got stuck today for the first time and MAN was it PAINFUL! I was in "rush mode" at work and forgot that I have to slow down to eat...

I don't think that this pose would be appropriate in the hallways at work, but I'll sure keep it in mind if it ever happens at home... I really hope it doesn't though - it SUCKED!

Yes, I learned this past week that this works. I got stuck during a work/client dinner. I was socializing and not paying enough attention. Generally, I can contort or straighten up and it slides through but not this time. I walked into the bathroom and did the "downward dog" bracing myself on the toilet. it was not graceful but worked automatically and instant relief. Such a strange feeling and a relief once it passes!

I too can attest to this working. I was doing really well on Friday, sitting at my desk, eating my lunch. I was taking my time and focusing on chewing thoroughly and slowly. But all of a sudden I realized that much more time had passed than I had thought. I gulped that last bite and Darn it!!! :(

That last piece was super stuck. I leaned over and put my hands on the lowest edge of a bookshelf. Within a couple of minutes, up came lunch. That wasn't the perfect result but it alleviated having to sit there in agony waiting for it to digest enough to pass through. I went and brushed my teeth and carried on with my day.

Thanks for the tip!

Is that possible with out laying down? What are feet LoL j/k :( Good idea though.

This has happened to me and I went to the bathroom, stood in the stall and bent over as well as I could. At least no one could see me trying to get un-stuck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
