How often did you call your insurance while waiting for approval?

Recommended Posts

The subject says it all I guess... I am just looking for opinions and experience on calling insurance and how many times per week/month/etc you called them.

My surgeon turned in the paperwork on 3/13, they show they it as being received on 3/20 - I called on 3/23 to ask about it and actually got a higher up phone person that had access to the "queue" and so she dropped it into the queue for the approval department to review. I called again yesterday and they said to wait a couple of more weeks to call back because it takes "up to 30 days".

Should I call back and start annoying them? Do they record that stuff, I wonder? And if so, will it delay them just because I'm being irritating?

Thanks for any input or opinions!

I was blessed with a wonderful employee of the hospital where my surgeon is head of bariatrics. She faxed everything to my ins and I had my answer in just under 48 hours!

I called every 4 or 5 days. I was denied 3 times before I got approved. I knew it was denied the 3rd time before the drs office did. I had everything straightened out and sent to them the next day and that was a week and 1/2 ago. I just got the call from the dr this am that I was approved.

Well, I went ahead and at the risk of being annoying, called them back today. I guess I had good timing because they let me know when I called that I was APPROVED!!!!! :) They gave me the approval number and said they hadn't even gotten the letters sent out yet!

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smile2:

Was there a place on the website that you could see it was pending approval? I'm trying to figure out how much to bug them myself, but I'm not even sure the Doctor's office has submitted it yet!

Do you have Cigna as well? I am not sure about the website, I never checked on theirs. I just knew when my doctor submitted my stuff and so I started calling a few days after that.

I would call your doctor's office first and ask if they have submitted it (and when) and then start following up with insurance.

Good luck!

Thank you! I was hoping to find a way to check status without bugging everyone constantly, but I don't think it's possible. Doc was supposed to have it all submitted this week, so I'll start calling insurance next week.

Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
