PRE-OP Dieting...Need Advice

Recommended Posts

I have a surgery date of April 22, and my pre-op is this Friday, April 3. When I first met with my surgeon last month, he said I should try to lose 10% of my weight prior to the surgery. That's 24 pounds in 30-days! If I could lose 24 pounds, I wouldn't need surgery!!! However, I have cut out all fast food, pastries, etc., and have been eating more fruits, vegetables, and fish. This morning I got on my scale and I've actually gained a few pounds. I started crying because I literally cannot lose weight. Do surgeons normally give you an actual pre-op diet to follow? I'm just concerned he might cancel my surgery because I've gained weight. I'm pretty scared because I've been waiting two years for this, and I don't want to wait any longer. Anybody have any advice??

Hopefully he did not actually mean for you to lose 24 lb in 30 days - that sounds unreasonable, as well as dangerous. The first time I saw my doctor and was accepted for surgery, he said to lose 5 pounds before it could be scheduled. He should have a pre-op plan for you to follow when you next see him - I have seen several versions here, ranging from a couple of days to 2 weeks (which I had to do) of a liquid diet. Just follow what your doctor says to do.

Okay, I'll be seeing him on Friday. I'm hoping he will have an actual diet for me to follow. I'll let you know. Thanks for your reply...I feel much better.

your doc is crazy!!! 24lbs in 30 days is unlikely. i have a couple of tips for u though.... increase ur Water intake like crazy... try to stick to low carbs like meat, low fat dairy, veggies... and most of all RELAX i know it's a stressfull, but take a deep breath and make good food choices , drink ur water and all will be well. if u have any more concerns feel free to drop me a line.

good luck!!!

Well, I lost 32 pounds in, um, 37 days, by doing "my" preop diet for 3 weeks (lost 15) and then my surgeons (which I should've done from the start) for another 2 1/2 weeks (17 more pounds). BUT i started very high at 405.

Just do what your doc says, not what you read, or think you "should" do, don't cheat, and you'll be fine!

Thanks Amy. I've cut out ALL carbs and am drinking a TON of Water. Today my ankles were so swollen, I've never had this before. Could be from being overweight, or I'm retaining water...not sure. But I hope my DR gives me an actual "pre-op" diet, since my surgery is April 22. But I really appreciate your help. I love knowing that I'm not alone!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
