Hospital nightmare with eating.

Recommended Posts

I was admitted to my local hospital over the weekend - ER doc thought it might be my appendix. So, of course, the doc put me on a diabetic diet (I am). I tried to order according to how we are supposed to eat but they wouldn't let me get enough Protein. First day, nurse told them to let me get whatever I want but by the second day it was a nightmare. New doc put me on 60 grams protein per day - sounds great, right? Wrong - they treated it as a protein restriction and luckily I left that day. Breakfast is usually easiest for protein so I wanted an egg with cheese - no, can't have cheese. It was a constant struggle because the person that answered the phone said I couldn't have this or that but he couldn't tell me how much protein I was getting. Finally, I talked to the dietician whose husband had the procedure and she was going to change it but I left.

Now, I know ahead of time to talk to my doc when I go in for knee replacement.

It's really good that you are vigilant! BUT, depending on how long you're in the hospital, of course....going a day or two with less Protein won't hurt you, not short term or long term. Once it gets beyond 2-3 days, then you might need to agitate. (Please confirm with your surgeon)

Worst case they could've given you a "shake" like glucerna, ensure, or some such.

I agree . . . a day or two with lower Protein won't really affect you.

It also seems like most hospitals have no idea about eating after WLS, probably due to lack of exposure to people with specific dietary needs as a result of WLS. It is nice to know that they would have been able to modify the diet if you had stayed longer.

I hope you are feeling much better and are back to normal.

I know a day or two wouldn't matter but I'm so used to trying to control myself. I control my pain (I have Fibromyalgia), learning to control my eating, and control the way I look so people don't know I'm sick. When you go into the hospital they take all control away.

I asked what to do when I went in for my knee replacement. My weight loss nurse said to tell my doc to order a normal diet and let me choose. Imagine that - let me make a decision when I'm in the hospital? Surely someone will try to change that.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
