Getting enough fluids?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else have trouble getting enough fluids? I think I am dehydrated! My tongue is yellow! I hate to mess with my current fill level because I am losing so well, but I can only sip a little Sprite through a straw. Water comes back up -wonder why that is? Has anyone else had a yellow tongue? (yuck!):P:biggrin:

I try to drink lot of Water. Here's a suggestion, though: Hit your 6-8 glasses a day and combine that with reducing your sodium intake. You will notice a huge difference in the way you feel and look.

Keep trying on the Water, and avoid carbonated soda, for many reasons. The air in the soda may be blowing up your pouch and making the water more difficult. If you can't get water down, you are entirely to tight. Talk to your doctor right away. Dehydration is dangerous.

I'm with you o that one, terebel! A minimum of 64 oz. of Fluid is a challenge. Some days I fall short of getting 64 oz. of Fluid. Remember that we can count any fluids you drink during the day along with the Water.

im with everyone, its hard to try and drink 64oz of Fluid. especially when you have a small bladder like me! but i try and mix it up, not just drinking plain Water. i have an assortment of crystal light mixers on my desk at work, this way i dont feel like im just drinking water for the sake of drinking water.

My doctor & support group tell me that straws are a big no no. They encorporate air in the pouch, causing burping etc. Also, I was told no carbonated beverages, b/c of the gas expanding in my pouch. Best of luck to ya!

I have trouble with Water, as well. My doctor told me it could be bc of gas in the stomach. Like the others said above, carbonated drinks can cause that. I have to work up to water during the day bc it seems like the water sits on top of the gas and won't go down. If I can get yogurt down first thing in the morning, that tends to open my band up a little and also gets something in my pouch so its not filled with air when I try water. Milk could also work as well since its thicker than water. I've had to learn that since my last fill. I also have a hard time with liquids whenever I get a fill bc I become irritated so its hard to determine if I'm too tight or not. I'm going to take some yogurt to my next appt and see if they will let me eat that instead of water since I do better with yogurt first thing.

Although everything went well with my surgery, I've caused myself undue pain by NOT getting enough fluids. I've never been a tremendous Water drinker... and with the limitations from the band... Constipation to the point of almost going to the ER, Kidney pain to the point I could barely walk. This can 'get you' if you fail to stay hydrated. I'm back to recovery with LOTS of fluids whether or NOT I want them. Don't allow yourself to fall into old habits. In just a couple of short weeks since my surgery... The band is a TOOL and lifestyle changes are now a fact of life. Drinking water, getting rid of diet coke, not using a straw, are all part of the commitment of making positive changes. I can tell that I will PAY for my lapses into old habits.

I've found that any cold Fluid will not go down easy, but hot liquids just slide down. I can't drink more that 1 small coffee a day, and green tea is good but still has caffeine. So I bought a bunch of herbal teas that don't have caffeine, and drink that most of the day, like pear, peach, almond even ginger tea. I can get alot more fluids down this way, and I am told that it counts as Water. I add splenda to sweeten them and they are great.

I also have alot of Crystal lite later during the day, when my band is less tight.

I just got a fill and am feeling really good restriction for the first time. I am also worried about getting my fluids in. It seems first thing in the morning and after 8pm, I'm not able to do to well with fluids. I find that cold drinks hurt going down, so I've been warming Crystal light a little to room temp or a little warmer and I do fine sipping all day. I can't chug Water or drinks like I used to, so I just sip all day. I don't like tea and I usually drink iced coffee, so I've warmed my coffee in the morning and then the crystal light warmed. I think I'll try some water warmed too.

I have trouble with cold liquids first thing in the morning too. Since I'm a coffee addict, it's alright with me!!! If you don't do coffee, do herbal tea, green tea, whatever. Skim milk is very good for you, crystal light really tastes good. I have a hard time keeping my kids and husband away from the pitcher in the fridge. I like Water, and drink lots of it with ice when afternoon hits. We just had city water run to the house, so I'm happy happy happy!! The way I see it, coffee is a Fluid and it counts. I drink 3-4 cups in the mornings, and maybe 2 later in the afternoon. I ALSO drink ATLEAST 3 20oz waters a day, so I figure the dehydrating effect of the coffee is counteracted by the water. The more you pee, the more you are flushing fat and toxins out of your body, just remember that!!! And yes, it is hard to follow the don't drink before/after eating. I'm better at the after part than the before part.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
