After surgery ? what is your post op guideline?

Recommended Posts

Here is mine:

Day 1&2 – liquids only (including Protein Shakes)

Day 3 – soft food in ½ cup meals (till when I don’t know. I have to ask the dietician again)

I read somewhere that you should wait before adding Protein to your diet. Someone said liquid for 2 weeks (no protein shakes), then try mushy food.< /p>

What is your post op guideline if you don’t mind sharing with me?

Thank you,

I was clear liquids week one, full liquids week 2 (in other words it had to go through a straw, and included Protein shakes week 2) week 3 mushies week 4 soft foods (ie baked fish) and week 5-6 transition to regular food.

Do you have a realize band, or a lap band, do you know?

For me it was 2 wks of liquids, including shakes, then 2 weeks of mushies, then two weeks of milder meats, etc, then on from there. Even now my Dr. states no potatoes, rice, bread, Pasta. But i'm actually doing well with very little carbs.

I am not sure what kind of band but he said it is new, so I am guessing it is a Realize Band? I am going to email him and see what kind of band it is though.

Thank you,

I was on clear liquids for the first week, full liquids for the second week (cream Soup, pudding, popsicles) and than week 2-4 I am supposed to be on soft foods. After week 4 I start regular foods.

Mine is much the same as jennibells. I finished my first week on clear liquids only on Monday 3/30 so soft foods start this week and go for 3. Then on week 5 start seeing what I can work with.

He encouraged me to start immediately adding soft cooked vegetables to my diet to help with BM's. Soft broccoli here I come! Salads are not on the list yet and I do sorely miss them.

On a side note: I'm really not hungry so where I am must be the ah so elusive "sweet spot" that we will be aiming for when I get my first fill.

Mine was clear liquids for 3 days (not Protein shakes) and then mushys until the end of week 4. I was on mushys forever :P I was so tired of mushys, wanted a taco and Snacks so bad by then.

I didnt have a pre opt diet either, but did low fat high Protein and lost 9 lbs before I started my time time below. So, Im really down 9 lbs extra in addition to what it shows I lost.

I had a fill last Saturday and my fill doctor handed me the cup of Water to drink after the barium fill and said to cut back to not having more than this as a portion, that my pouch was a little extended. My pouch was the same size now as my band, which is bigger than she likes, cut back and shrink my pouch back. If you allow your pouch to get too big then you can have problems with the band slipping up around the stomach. She said it wasnt bad, just warned me to cut back.

You really shouldnt ever have more than 1/2 to 1 cup at a time of anything ..... forever. Have that much and if you are hungry later, have more, but dont have a larger portion than that or your pouch will stretch. I just got the talking to and my pouch and band examined on fluro Saturday. Only got a .4 cc fill, hardly worth the $200, but its good to touch base with the doctor when the weight is coming off slower.

jet, buy some Miralax, wonderfull stuff to keep you regular without harming you like laxatives. used to be prescription only. costco has it cheap.

Its doubtfull you are at your sweet spot, but you could still have some swelling after surgery. Very very few hit their sweet spot in one fill. My doctor wouldnt even come close. I just had my 4th fill to tighten me up. On average from the theads here it taks about 3 fills to hit your sweet spot, so dont expect to his it the first fill. ... and then as you continue to lose you will need fills along the way to stay at your sweet spot. I expect to need another fill after I lose about another 25 lbs.

I have a realize band now. I did have the lapband but it slipped and he put in the realize band because he said it was wider and had less cases of slippage. I am just happy I have a band, I dont care which one it is:)

I am sick to death of mushies and I am only in my first week!

jet-

I really didn't start getting hungry until I started eating soft foods. Once I started eating real food again I think it woke up my appetite.

Mine was two weeks full liquid then two weeks softfood. I am in the softfood phase right now. The nurse didn't specifically say how much I should eat each meal. I think I've been having one and half cup of food each meal. Fish, eggs, fat free cheese, tofu and well cooked vege are allowed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
