Band to Sleeve People

Recommended Posts

It makes me happy to read posts like that. It makes me even more certain that I have made the right decision.

Now I am just afraid that something is going to happen to prevent me from going down there to have my surgery. My dad fell down and can hardly walk.

I just got banded on the April 7, 2009. I wanted the Sleeve but Blue Cross-Blue Shield changed the rules and required a BMI of 50 to be eligible. I am sorry you had so many problems and that you are better now. i hope my experience is better.

Congrats on your surgery!

I guess my only advice would be this, if you start having problems that aren't easily resolved such as reflux, start considering your options. Don't do as some of us did and wait too long.

I know one person that's had her band for 7 years and she loves it!

I don't really worry about part of my stomach being removed anymore than a diseased appendix. Both are harming me and neither are doing me any favors.

It's a big deal until after it's done. After it is done it's no big deal, you don't really think about it. It's just like before surgery only you get full faster. ;o)

Oh my god. I so needed that. I had this thing of "I came here with it - I should leave with it" but if your appendix burst or your gall bladder was diseased or you had kidney cancer or whatever, you certainly wouldn't hold on to that! I've always said every time I've had a cancer scare that whatever it is - kidney, boob - whatever - lop it off, I'll get a new one! Why wouldn't I say the same thing about my stomach that's making me ill?

Move over ancient philosophers! We have true words of wisdom right here!

thanks!

Well, what does the fundus of your stomach do that you will miss? ;o)

HAHA! Wouldn't that be unfundused?

We need to start our own damn medical dictionary! We'd do it better-er!

oh yeah unfundused - that would be way more better!

I too could eat anything with the band, developed severe reflux, never felt restricted, and have had two slips. I rarely vomited and had no food restrictions. Now have an option to revise to either VSG or RNY. Would love to know what your decision to go with VSG was based on.

You lose the same weight as bypassed people at the end of 5 years with a sleeve BUT without the malabsorption.

If you can lose with restriction alone, that is the way to go. If you need malabsorption, DS is the way to go.

Bands and bypass are a thing of the past. Sleeves and DS are the future.

I so believe that you're right about this. The two-stage process is the way to go. Sleeve and then DS *IF* necessary. Like I said before, the more research I do into this (and I don't just mean reading what is said here - independent research, both pro and against the sleeve) I see it as the way to go. I was reading some info on the sleeve - and it was an anti-sleeve report - the cons of the sleeve were still better than the ones for the band! This won't be true for everyone, but I'd rather take out a portion of my body that isn't working, rather than put a device that could cause issues on a body part that isn't working right anyway. I wants me a sleeve!

bypass just scares the bajeebus outta me. I don't know why, per se, but it just does. I think part of the issue is that I've heard about so many people stretching their pouch out to be the size of a regular stomach - now you have 2 stomachs?! One that you've stretched out and another just flopping around in you??? Yikes!

Any malabsorption procedure concerns me. It's one of the things that keeps me on track, I don't want bypass or DS! ;o)

exactly. if it was just calories that weren't absorbed well - I'm all for that haha. But the essential Vitamins and nutrients that you need to....well....LIVE. That's a bit harsh. If someone could invent a way to just not absorb the calories well - we'd all be happy haha. But bypassing half the digestive system is not my idea of fun.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
