different medications?!? (asprin, etc.)

Recommended Posts

Okay so I have heard that after band I can't take headache meds b/c it messes up the band! My problem is that I get headaches very often, so what am I supposed to take to get rid of the pain if I can't take asprin? Has anyone been told similar info? What kind of meds do you take? i don't know I'm just curious, but I guess the best thing to do would be to talk to my doc. (which I will, but I just wanted to see what everyone would say first).

You shouldn't get frequent headaches, for one!

You need your primary to check that out! You may need glasses, or have an allergy, or some such.

AND NSAIDS (like aspirin, motrin, aleve) can irritate the stomach in any person. Once you are banded and have restriction, the pill CAN sit in your pouch and really mess it up. Some docs say no NSAIDS, some don't care, some say proceed carefully. So you are right, you need to ask your surgeon.

Tylenol should work for your headache and not mess with your pouch. It should be safe, depending on your health status, as long as you don't overdo it.

Seriously though, get those headaches checked out.

Definitely check with your dr! I have been able to use the children's liquid advil and liquid tylenol. I have used the tylenol for headaches and it seems to work just fine. I am using the advil for some temporary back pain that I am having.

I get frequent headaches too. I wasn't aware there were any concerns with taking meds etc. But I take Nurofen + and it seems to go down fine. I've had my band for a year and been taking them throughout that time and have had no problems. Having said that; there are plenty of souble options available OCT, it depends on what works for you.

I had Migraines before my band... and believe it or not, weight loss FIXED the VAST majority of them. Hopefully that will be the case for you as well. If not, my doc said Imitrex was ok but I have never needed that. I DO take Fioricet every couple months....

Tylenol. NSAIDs increase the chance of stomach bleeding in any person (I had a bleeding ulcer 18 months ago that was caused by Voltaryn). With the lap band, it inceases the chances so most docs tell us no NSAIDs. Buy liquid Tylenol and keep it on hand. As you get fills, your band will be tighter and you might not be able to swallow a normal pill so just get in the habit of asking for liquid medications, or medications that can be crushed.

Sorry it isn't something easily fixed, but I'm glad to know you've told your primary about it!

I have arthritis and I take celebrex but to protect my banded belly I take pepcid along with it. This seems to work fine.....so far anyway.

I had Migraines from the age of 12 till menopause as my mother did. I soooo looked forward to it!!!!!! I still get them occasionally, but seldom rather than most of the time. I sympathize with anyone who does get headaches frequently.

Ok, now I'm worried.

I suffer from gout (after about 6 months of no gout symptoms, I had a flare up last week) My primary dr prescribed me the max motrin dosage per day. then moved up to indomethacin. that is a very strong NAISD. after about two doses of that med my intestines take a beating...but i'm worried now that i have been banded.

I did remind my primar dr that I just recently had lapband surgery, and asked if these pills were ok for my stomach pouch. He said he didnt see any reason why there would be a problem, but to be careful.

Also when i start to get early "gouty" symptoms, I start taking motrin max doses to prevent a flare up.

I have not had my first fill yet, I go in tomorrow April 2nd. so wow... i'm a little nervous now that after this fill these meds will cause problems. yikes!

Tex_Mexie, TALK TO YOUR SURGEON! NSAIDs always run the risk of causing bleeding stomach ulcers. There may be a second med you can take when you take the NSAIDs that can reduce the risk since you woudn't be taking the NSAID for the long term.

I worry too as I have to take 800 mg of ibuprofen quite often when the inflammation flares up too much. I would like to see more information about what we could do to prevent problems. I always try to be sure that I take it around a meal. I use the patch sometimes, but I guess that can effect the stomach as well and it really does not seem to help me much.

I went for my first fill today and completely forgot to ask!

GRRRRRRRRRRR!

but i just think that i'm going to talk to my regular dr and get back on allopurinoll. i was on it for a while..then some insurance thing happened and my dr wanst in my provider network..so i just stopped going for a refill...but they got things fixed now. so i guess i'll have to go and see her for a refill.

JMS- did your dr give you a food list of things to avoid? its hard to follow now because we have to eat Protein 1st...and that is what gout sufferes are supposed to avoid. :scared2:

I hear that cherry pills help keep uric acid levels down...basically any dark berries help too.

good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
