Have you been hit in the port yet?

Recommended Posts

I'll bet you all can probably agree, nobody slaps you on the back, till you have a sunburn and nobody steps on your foot unless you have a foot injury. I've had this slight fear that someone is going to hit me in my port and I will be rushed to the hospital after it tears away from my abdomen muscles.

FEAR YOURSELF FIRST !!!!!!! I tapped myself at exactly 1 week, 2X in less than an hour. Two nights later rolled over onto bunched up blanket during the night and also most kicked husband out of bed. As my tummy swelling went down, my low profile port is setting out like a push button. Now as I lean over the sink or such I get a reminder.

Good point. One of my cats, Sidney, loves to "hup-two" on my stomach and I swear she knows something is there that shoudn't be.

I say I have and it hurt like hell.My Lab jumped up on me and clawed me across my port.I was afraid to raise my shirt and look because I just knew that it would be hanging outside my body, held only by the tubing.

Yep and it hurt like hell!

I've got a toddler and we've got a full-size crew cab truck with a 6 inch lift and 35 inch tires on it. She loves to stand on the seat and leap at us (we're AT the truck, she's not really airborne!). Usually I'm ready for her but this time I wasn't and I was standing a little sideways when she leaped. Her knee directly nailed my port! I almost dropped her! She'll be 3 in 2 months and I pride myself on the fact that I've never dropped her! She almost hit the ground the hard way that day!

The other problem I've had is sometimes I still swell (surgeon says swelling can last upwards of a year) in the evenings, depending on what's happened during the day, and I'll bump the counters in the kitchen if I'm not paying attention. Direct shot to the port. When I swell, that part of my stomach "bumps" out a little more than the rest. Makes it easier to hit!

I try not to worry about it too much 'cause when I do, it seems to get hit or bumped more often! Certain situations, like getting DD out of the truck, I pay more attention to where I am in relation to what's happening. Other than that, it is what it is. Sure hurts tho!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
