I'm sure we all had our share of joint pain pre-op but is anyone experiencing it now? I am finding it impossible to exercise. I hate to sit down at the end of the day b/c if I sit for more than 5 minutes it's like I've gained a 100 pounds trying to get up. I am avioding shirts that require me to let my arms over my head b/c the shoulder pain is so bad.

Any ideas?

Jamie,

It sounds like you need to visit the doctor. Are you having pain in both shoulders? Hips too?

Take care,

Yes pain is in shoulder and hip joints, the worst is my hips. I don't know if you have kids but it's very similar to what I felt at about 32 weeks or so when the hip ligaments start to loosen.

Someone told me that we have fat in between our joints so when you lose you can lose it there too....she's not especially reliable though.

Employee health is doing annual labs next week so I'll see if anything comes back abnormal before I freak out.

Thanks for the reply- I posted the same question to Dr. Curry over on OH so I'll see if he has any ideas.

Does Tylenol help? I know I still ache every now and then and tylenol does the trick.

I would not freak out just yet. Go see a doc and let him run some tests, it might be a simple fix.

I never heard of fat between your joints. And, my kiddo is adopted so I have nothing to relate being 32 weeks preggo.

Good luck

Hi, My doctor told me that as I lose weight my body had to adjust again how to walk, stand etc. She told me that it is as if you are re-learning how to do everything and your body now has to compensate to the new you. I had the same joint pain when I reached your weight loss milestone. I am glad my doctor told me about it ahead of time, so I did not think I was going crazy. I went and a couple of massages. That seemed to help and now my pain is gone. It does take a little while. I did not expect the pain because eveyone had told me that I would not have pain after I lost weight. I am glad that my doctor told me a head of time. I hope this makes some sense.

I'd start with Tylenol, gentle stretching, and bath-soaking, if you can find the time.

Thank you SO much for the responses.

I did a bunch of labs today at work so hopefully something will come of it. The body compensation makes alot of sense. Tylenol does work but I don't have any desire to drink it with every meal.

Sounds like a great excuse for a massage! I love that we have a spa in the facility I may just have to make an appointment.

I have joint pain, but it's because I have arthritis. In fact I have to have my hip replaced. My knees feel tons better, but my hip hurts daily. Have you gotten your results back from your doctor? I hope it turns out to be something more easily managed then what I am dealing with.

Exercising is hard... very very hard. Heck cleaning is hard. Simple things that most people do with ease are really difficult for me sometimes. There are some low impact exercise programs that you may be able to use. I am starting the walk away the pounds series by Leslie Sansone. I am also going to be playing Wii alot more with my daughter. I'll be losing, but at least I'll be moving.

If I can drop another 20 - 25 pounds the end of June. Then I am going to go through with the surgery this summer. I need to go ahead and schedule it by early May because they like eight weeks notice. If I'm not losing like I want to, then I will simply post pone it.

Thanks for asking- my labs all came back normal with the exception of my thyroid which has climbed back up to the 8-9 range. The joint pain is slowly improving, no anwsers really but I'm back to walking so hopefully that will spur the weight loss a little bit.

Jamie--I had a lot of joint pain before surg. Then I lost about 50lbs and it still hurt so I asked my MD to send me to PT. I just could NOT believe the diff after PT!!!!! I still do have arthritis and joint pain but no where NEAR what it was before. I was told about the compensation but that isn't all. I was a couch potato so my muscles and tendons were really out of shape. The PT told me that as we gain weight and age our posture (and spine) goes out of wack. Also -- when we are inactive during all that time the dead cells from our muscles do not "wash away" and they hang around the muscle and sort of clog thing up and that contributes to inflammation of the muscle and joints. Then when we go to exercise or lift things our muscles don't slide over each other the way they should so we actually injure the muscle. That causes the pain and more inflammation (any nurse out there reading my laymans way of explaining this must be cringing by now!!). PT uses methods to get rid of all those dead cells. That allows blood to circulate and get right down in there to nourish the muscles so the inflammation goes down. That way --you can go to the gym without so much pain. I also began execising by just doing a treadmill --- then an upright bike. Strengths training began with just CURVES. Nothing strenuous. Just enough to help build my muscles in a gentle way. Now I can go to a regular gym without much pain. I just came back from my MD and now we feel that adding in Yoga will help stretch muscles and improve posture so the bones and joints don't pressure my nerves. I'm very hopeful. I hope some of this helps. Stay in touch.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
