How to determine amount of insurance coverage?

Recommended Posts

This just doesn't seem right to me ...

I had a consult w/ a surgeon back in Jan. I don't think I plan to pursue surgery with THIS doctor. His office staff was very nice and helpful - they submitted a request to my insurance just to see if they will cover any part of PS.

To my surprise and delight - they will cover the panni portion of the TT. I have an approval letter for code: 15830- panniculectomy. The surgeon suggested an extended TT and I was quoted $9,500. He is out of network, so I know my coverage is 70% of the contracted rate, after a $2,000 deductible. No one from my insurance co or the doctor's office can tell me how much I will be liable for.

I'm expected to go into surgery and not find out until AFTER if I have to pay anywhere from $2,000 - 9,500?

In general, 15830 will reimburse about $1800 - $2500 (obviously this varies among insurance providers, but this should give you a "ballpark" idea). It is possible that this will go towards you deductible and you will only get a small amount of reimbursement. Your PS office should have been able to give you an idea about this amount, because they have probably experienced this before.

Thanks Dr Schulman

I was thinking it would cover about a 1/4 to a 1/3 of the cost.

I'm coming to see you in April. I had to cancel my appointment this month, emergency gall bladder removal on St Patty’s Day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
