Anyone hypothyroid with the LB?

Recommended Posts

I am. I had surgery 12/29/09 and have lost 34 pounds. About a month ago, my primary care doctor checked my levels and lowered my daily dosage! He wants to recheck every 3 months to be sure we are at the right dose with my ever changing body weight. He said it would never go away, but as I lose body mass, I will need a lower dose.

Hope this helps!

HI, I was banded on 3/20/09. I am down 26 lbs so far. I was wondering if you meant wieghtloss wise? Since if your Thyroid does not work so well. I can be harder to loose wieght. I do take synthroid for it.

Can anyone share thoughts on that?:)

I was diagnosed with hyper. I had to take an iodine radiation pill and go back to the endo next week to see if it is going hypo, I am also trying to get approved for the band (Insurance wanted my tyroid checked, after the six month weight loss, that is how I found out I was hyper). :) The endo and Dr. Snows office said I should not have an issue getting approved with a hypothyroid.

I have hypothyroidism and my numbers took a MAJOR spike recently. Normal range is 0.4 to 4.5; anything above or below that is not good. After having a baby and not having my thyroid checked in ages (bad girl, I know) I learned my numbers jumped to 86.7--- not 8.67----86.7!!! My thyroid was pretty much nonfunctioning. When my primary doctor called me he explained I was at levels that would cause organ failure, cardiac arrest, etc. My endocrinologist immediately doubled my meds and we have my numbers down to 16.22 which is still not perfect, but WAY better than they were. My surgery is scheduled for April 9th. I have a long day of tests and appointments this Wednesday and am hoping they don't cancel the procedure because of my numbers. However, I already have a letter of approval form my insurance, so maybe that'll help. Either way, it did not keep me from getting approved to begin with. Best of luck to you.

I have had hypothyroid for the past 20 plus yrs. The April before my surgery (6/3/08)I found out that I need to go on a higher dose of synthyroid 1.75. Of course I was waiting for my PCD to tell me not the dr. who my surgeon sent me to for clearance. I followed up after my surgery with my PCD and he up my dose and it has been fine. I lost 70 from the day of my surgery I have more energy and have been walking/jogging 1 1/2 miles a day. I am so glad I have this wondeful tool. I have to say I love my band!!!!!

I am hypo and have lost nearly 75 pounds. I'm 16 months out. At my one year mark I had lost enought that my thyroid levels were a high, so my doctor reduced my dosage of synthroid. He checks it now every 4 months and said as I continue to lose I will continue to have it adjusted. So far I reduced my synthroid medication, I've cut my blood pressure meds in half and completely got off my bladder control medication. The band is wonderful and I feel great! Before surgery, I was convinced I would never lose with the band. I thought with hypothyroidism I was sentenced to a life of obesity. I was wrong. I've been pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the reply! I am happy to hear that the LB has the potential to help me. I have been hypo since I was 16 years old and I am now 30 years old. I definitely have always felt that I am doomed to be fat forever because of my thyroid ( well, now lack there of since I have it entirely removed last month ).

I have been hypo for seven years now. As long as you have your levels under control with meds, there is no reason why being hypo would keep the band from working. I did have to lower my Synthroid dosage after losing about 65 pounds.

I have hypothyroidism. Since I got the band last May, my meds have gone up...I was on 125 mcg, now I'm on 137 mcg and may have to go up again...because I'm not in normal range. I'm also not losing.

Thanks for starting this thread. I wondered if anyone else shared my situation. I was on thyroid medicine for about five years then my numbers leveled off and I didn't need to take any medicine for 2.5 years. My blood levels were good in August 2008. My surgery was in December 2008. In February 2009 my bloodwork showed I needed to go back on thyroid medicine. I'm on a small dose and will go back for a recheck next month. Taking llevoxyl in the am is a good way to get in my first glass of Water.< /p>

Hello,

I am hypothyroid due to having my thyroid removed in 2002. I had my LB surgery in September. I had my 6 month labs done and I my levels are still great. I take 50mcg of levothyroid. I have lost 45 pounds so far. Unfortunately I will never be able to come off these meds. Good luck.

I too have hypothyrodism... in fact I'm beyond "hypothyrodistic"... I don't have a thyroid nor parathyroids at all. I had thyroid cancer in 1982. I had lap-band surgery on Feb 11 this year. To date I've lost 44 pounds. I'm on 175 mcg of synthroid / day. I had blood test last week and am waiting to hear from the endocrinologist what my thyroid levels are.

I feel GREAT.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
