Dry Heaving... from gas maybe?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 days post-op and yesterday I dry-heaved once and that was it.

Today I got a metallic taste in my mouth and produced a little extra saliva (what I would consider "sliming" from what I've read on this site).

Thennn I proceeded to dry heave about 5 times in a row. I HURT now. I didn't eat anything. I am on straight liquids and hadn't had anything other than Water for the 2 hours before it happened. Was sipping slowly and carefully as well, so I don't think I did anything to cause it.

Anyway, I'm still hurting from it and I'm trying to figure out what it was from. I felt gas in my chest (that's where it has been since my surgery) and I felt like I needed to burp, but then the burps just went into dry heaving. Blah. Anyone else have this happen? I did a search and couldn't really find what I was looking for. I am going to call my surgeon in the morning but it is too late to do so now. Any input is appreciated.

Yep, had the same thing. Scary as heck. For me, I think that I drank too fast. Got into a conversation and just lost track. Terrible pain for two hours, tons of burps and ended up heaving over the toilet. Patting my chest helped get out the burps and it eventually passed, thank goodness. HTH. Good luck!

Please let me know what your doctor said, when I talked to my dr. he just told me to drink super slowly but for the past 9 hours I haven't been able(or wanted to drink) to drink any more than 10 oz. of Water. I haven't dry heaved again but feel like I am stepping backwards, yesterday I was able to have my 3 Protein Shakes, and water and even felt like eating but I didn't! But today after I had my morning Protein Shake I had gas pain and then tried to laid down and felt like I would vomit and decided to get up and dry heaved 8-10 times before having a somewhat liquid bowel movement(sorry for the picture). Felt better but then couldn't stand swallowing water or anything else for that matter. I am so confused. I just don't want to have to run back to the dr. unless I know for sure it just isn't gas!:smile2::cursing::thumbup:

It's good that you're calling the doctor. I don't know whether the gas is the culprit--I'd be more inclined to think it was a response to all your body has just been through--anesthesia, meds, irritability of the stomach due to the placement of the band, etc.

Your doctor will likely prescribe an anti-nausea med for you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
